NCAA Football Power Rankings – Week 1
The first week of the 2010 NCAA football season is in the books and while most of the top ranked schools played the equivalent of a tune-up game last week, there were a couple of big time matchups between ranked opponents. The game with the biggest impact was No. 3 Boise State’s 33-30 come from behind win over No.10 Virginia Tech. In other head to head matchups of ranked teams No.6 TCU beat No. 24 Oregon State 30-21 and No. 21 LSU beat No. 18 North Carolina 30-24.
Here is a look at my top five schools in the country along with their current odds to win the BCS title.
Alabama was a 38 ½ point favorite in its home opener against San Jose State and it went out and did exactly what it was supposed to. The final score was 48-3 with the Crimson Tide covering the spread by 6 ½ points with the total line of 51 ending up a push. The absence of RB Mark Ingram did little to slow down the Tide’s running game as they still managed to gain 257 yards on the ground.
No.2 Ohio State +300
Ohio State jumped out to a 28 point lead at halftime and never looked back in a 45-7 win over Marshall. The Buckeyes easily covered the 28 points spread by 10. The 46 point total went ‘over’ by six points. QB Terrelle Pryor completed 17-of-25 attempts for 247 yards and three TDs but only ran for 17 yards on eight carries.
No.3 Boise State +500
In a thrilling end to the first weekend of games, Boise State saved its season by coming from behind to beat No.10 Virginia Tech 33-30. The Broncos were a 1 ½ point favorite in a game that went back and forth all night long. The 52 ½ point total went over as these two teams combined for 63 points. Boise State QB Kellen Moore finished the night 23-of-38 for 215 yards and three TD’s.
TCU ‘s opener against No.24 Oregon State was a bit tighter than expected as the Horned Frogs had to battle the Beavers to the end to come away with a 30-21 win as a 13 ½ point favorite. The 49 ½ point total squeaked ‘over’ on a TCU safety in the fourth quarter. None the less, it was a quality win over a ranked opponent. Give credit to a powerful Horned Frogs’ rushing attack that gained close to 300 yards on the ground.
Nebraska was another team that did exactly what it needed to do to come away with a win in Week 1. The Cornhuskers were a 39 point favorite and they beat Western Kentucky 49-10 with the game ending up a ‘push’. The 53 point total line went ‘over’ by six. The game was never close as Nebraska built a 28-0 lead early in the third before calling off the dogs. QB Taylor Martinez showed his versatility by throwing for 136 yards and running for 127 in his first start for Nebraska.
