2010-2011 Mississippi State Season Preview
Mississippi State was stunned to learn it didn’t make the NCAA Tournament after finishing 9-7 in the Southeastern Conference, 22-11 overall and tied with Ole Miss for the West Division championship. The Bulldogs lost two heartbreaking games in overtime to Kentucky and went 3-7 in games decided by five points or less. A victory or two might have paved the way for a dance card. It will be a charge that will have to be made without two of the most memorable players in school history. Shot blocker extraordinaire Jarvis Vamado was taken in the second round of the NBA Draft, and 3-point marksman Barry Stewart finished his career as the all-time leader in made 3-pointers. But with Twany Beckham and Elgin Bailey healthy, and the return of Johnson, Kodi Augustus and potentially Dee Bast, the Bulldogs have enough talent to contend for another SEC West title.

Mississippi State Backcourt
Johnson and Bast declared themselves eligible for the draft before deciding to return to college. Bast withdrew his name after the deadline and is waiting to find out if the NCAA allows him to return to the team. Bast was third on the team in scoring and led the Bulldogs with 5.2 assists per game, while Johnson was second in scoring and shot 40.7 percent from 3-point range. The 6-5 Beckham sat out last season after having hip surgery and should be a valuable contributor. Stansbury envisions Bast and Beckham complimenting each other well. MSU added a terrific shooter in freshman Jalen Steele, who originally committed to Auburn before coach Jeff Lebo was fired. Junior college transfer Brian Bryant, who can play either guard position, will give the team added depth.
Mississippi State Frontcourt
With Varnado gone, the 6-8 Augustus will anchor the paint. He can stretch defenses with his ability to make treys or use his strength to score inside. Bailey was sidelined with a torn ACL but is expected to make a full recovery. He will impact the frontcourt with his toughness, rebounding prowess and physical play. McDonald’s All-American forward Renardo Sidney will finally be eligible after sitting out the first nine games. The NCAA refused to allow him to compete last season as it investigated his amateur status. If he gets into shape, he will make a major impact. Stansbury hopes 7-1 reserve center John Riek will be much improved as a sophomore.
2010-2011 Mississippi State Predictions
Stansbury has had a stronghold on the SEC West for quite some time and that figures to continue. If that happens this time around, MSU hopes it will be enough to earn a spot in the NCAA Tournament should the Bulldogs fail to get the automatic bid. Mississippi State Finish in the SEC: 1st in West Division
