Maryland opened its Atlantic Coast Conference schedule with a 77-68 win at home over No. 18 Florida State on Sunday night. Greivis Vasquez scored a game-high 22 points and served up five assists while Eric Hayes had 17 points in the win. The Terrapins out rebounded a bigger and taller Seminole squad 40-34 and shot 46 percent from the field against the nation’s best defense in field goal percentage (33.7 percent). Landon Milbourne and Jordan Williams led in rebounds, each with seven. The Terps improved on their three-point game against FSU going 10-of-16, and shot 46.8 percent from the field — the most FSU has allowed this season.
The Demon Deacons weren’t so lucky as Miami’s James Dews scored with 30 seconds remaining as Hurricanes edged out Wake Forest 67-66 on Saturday. L.D. Williams led with 17 points and six rebounds, while Ishmael Smith tacked on 11 points and seven assists, in a loss that ended the Deacons seven-game win streak. This is the fourth time Wake Forest has failed to reach the 70-point mark this season, all but one resulting in a loss. The offensive continues to struggle from beyond the arc, going 4-for-15 in their loss at Miami and just 33 percent for the season.
The odds makers have the Terps as +9 ½ -point underdogs in this one.
Wake Forest have played several close games as of late, winning back-to-back games in overtime against Richmond and Xavier at home, followed by a one-point loss at Miami in the return to ACC competition. A total of five games have been decided by single digit this season. Although they are 4-1 in those five, they cannot afford to continue this trend against a schedule that includes Maryland, Duke, UNC and Virginia in their next four.
Expect the Demons to get out in front early in this one, winning by eight.
