2010-2011 Charlotte Season Preview

Charlotte athletic director Judy Rose said the 4gers didn’t need rebuilding, just a new direction. With that, she fired 12-year coach Bobby Lutz, Charlotte’s all-time winningest coach, and filled the position with up-and-coming Ohio State assistant Alan Major. Major has worked for two of the Big Ten’s top coaches – Ohio State’s Thad Matta and Illinois’ Bruce Weber. He is a gym rat who wants a challenge and garnering a major D-I program of his own is a testament to his commitment. Major gained lots of credit for the development of Portland Trail Blazers’ center Greg aden when he was an assistant coach at Ohio State and now, coincidentally, inherits a pair of strong post men in Chris Braswell and Shamari Spears. The duo combined for 590 of the Niners’ 1,807 shots attempts (33 percent), as they both shot 46.4 percent from the floor. If Major’s knack for post development proliferates this duo’s paint acumen even more, then Charlotte may be an even tougher matchup inside. Charlotte lost a slick ballhandler in Dijuan Harris, but returns Derrio Green to the perimeter. Green took 252 threes last season while shooting only 85 two-point shots. His 31.3 percent from behind the arc is less of a percentage than the 4gers need, but he made 2.5 per game, second in the A-I0. Defensively, the 4gers fed off the presence of Green and Harris on the perimeter, while Phil J ones worked the inside to block 65 shots, 2.1 per game, for third in the league. The reputation of this program has been that of a high-octane 3-point machine, and now it appears to be headed toward a more post-oriented outfit under Major.
