2010-2011 Boston College Season Preview
To call this a transition year in Chestnut Hill is an understatement. The Eagles enter 2010-11 with a scarcity of scholarship players and just two newcomers, both of whom signed late and neither of whom was recruited by major D-1 programs. New coach Steve Donahue got the nation’s attention by leading Cornell to the Sweet 16, but he’ll be swimming in the ACC’s deep waters with a team that lacks depth. At least BC returns four starters and a couple of seasoned reserves from last year’s 15-16 team. They had all better take their vitamins and stay healthy, because any injury epidemic could prove disastrous. Donahue knows the game and can motivate, but contending in the ACC this year will be quite a challenge and this has the look of a long-term rebuilding effort.

Boston College Backcourt
This is where the Eagles are most vulnerable. Although starter Biko Paris and Reggie Jackson, last year’s second-leading scorer, return, Rakim Sanders decided to transfer. The 6-3 Jackson is a junior who showed he could score and distribute, but he shot a mere 29.1 percent from 3-point range – and still attempted the second-most treys on the team. The junior must be more accurate while still providing production off the dribble and on the backboards. Paris did not score much last year (4.8 points per game), something that must change now that Sanders is gone. The 6-1 senior did a solid job running the team, but it’s imperative he becomes more of a complete player, given BC’s short bench. Junior Dallas Elmore is a sound wing who can score off the dribble and in the mid-range, but he is no threat from long range. The backcourt fortifications aren’t going to send any recruiting analyst into a frenzy. Gabriel Moton is a 6-2 scorer who pulled out of an Air Force commitment to join the Eagles. Donahue also recruited him while at Cornell. Another wing, 6-6 Danny Rubin, decided to play at BC instead of being a preferred walk-on at Colgate.
Boston College Frontcourt
The Eagles are strong here, albeit thin. Senior Joe Trapani should thrive in Donahue’s system, thanks to his all-around skills. He can nail the 3-pointer and works well inside. He’s a capable defender and a good enough passer. It would be surprising if he did not have a big year. Classmate Corey Raji doesn’t have Trapani’s versatility, but Donahue’s attack needs a good post man, and Raji can get it done inside. He’s also a solid presence on the offensive boards. Josh Southern is not an overpowering pivot, and he is at his best as a complementary part. That’s not so bad if the other starters are producing. He plays good positional defense and is a big body the Eagles can use to screen and help create space for the others.
2010-2011 Boston College Predictions
The Eagles are the type of team that won’t be blown out by anybody, but often might fade down the stretch of games because of their personnel issues. It will be up to Donahue to find roles for Elmore and the freshmen so that they can help the regulars stay fresh. The new coach has a reputation for doing a lot with less, but employing that strategy in the ACC will be a big test.
