NASCAR Sprint Cup Chase Review- July 14th
With 19 races already in the books for the 2010 NASCAR Sprint Cup season, the Race to the Chase is well underway. With no race scheduled for this week it is a good time to take a look at how the top seven drivers in the Sprint Cup point standings have fared so far along with their current odds to win it all.
For most of the season Harvick has been able to hold onto the top spot in the Sprint Cup point standings. After 19 races he currently remains in first with 2745 points. This season he has 13 Top 10 finishes including eight top 5 finishes. His two victories this year came in week nine at Talladega and in week 18 at Daytona.
After a slow start Gordon has worked his way to second in the standings with 2642 points, 103 points out of first. While he has yet to capture a checkered flag this season he has come awfully close with 11 top 10 finishes. The amazing stat is that 10 of these were actually a top five finish.
The four time Sprint Cup champion has had some peaks and valleys this season but he is still right in the thick of things with 2557 points, 188 points out of the lead. Johnson has 11 top 10 finishes including eight top fives and five wins. His five victories this season have been streaky with wins in week two at Fontana, week three in Los Vegas, and in week five in Bristol. Later in the year he returned to Victory Lane with wins at Sonoma in week 16 and Loudon in week 17.
Hamlin has been staying right on Johnson’s heel as far as wins and currently has 2542 points, 203 points out of first. He has eight top 10 finishes with seven top fives and five wins as well. His five victories this season have been in week six in Martinsville, week eight in Texas, week 11 in Darlington, week 14 in Pocono, and most recently in week 15 in Michigan.
Busch has been steady all season long and is currently in fifth place in the standings with 2524 points, 221 points back. He has 11 top 10 finishes this season with seven of them actually in the top five. In week four he won in Atlanta and in week 13 in won in Charlotte. The week before Busch also won the All-Star Race in Charlotte which was a non-points event.
This Busch has fallen off the pace a bit but still is in perfect shape for making the Chase with 2488 points, 257 points behind the leader. He has nine top 10 finishes this year including five top 5’s. He has also won twice this season; week 10 in Richmond and week 12 in Dover.
Burton is another driver that has raced well so far but has been unable to win yet this year. He is currently in seventh place in the standings with 2465 points, 280 points behind Harvick. He has nine top 10 finishes including four finishes in the top 5.
