The Boston Red Sox will close out a three-game home series against division rival and defending champions the New Yankees at Fenway Park on Wednesday night.

The Red Sox opened the series on Sunday rallying from a four run deficit to win game one 9-7, but split the series with a 6-4 loss on Tuesday when reliever Hideki Okajima walked in the go –ahead run in the eighth and Robinson Cano capped the scoring with a solo homerun in the ninth.
John Lackey, who has had mixed results against the Yankees, including the 2009 postseason (5-8 /4.26 ERA), will take the mound for the first time in a Boston uniform. Lackey is 5-7 with an ERA of 4.66 lifetime versus New York. He will do battle against the Yankees’ Andy Pettitte, who is making his season debut. The veteran lefty pitched a solid 2009 season, going 14-8 with a 4.16 ERA in the regular season before going 4-0 with a 3.52 ERA in five postseason starts and earning the win in World Series-clinching Game 6 against Philadelphia. Pettitte, is 20-9 with a 3.74 ERA in 39 career appearances against Boston, including playoff matchups.
The Red Sox, who have traditionally been a team built around power hitting, have recently decided to focus more on run prevention than run production. It’s speculated that it is due in large part to cutting the teams overall salary. However, despite the trend that seems to be sweeping through Major League clubs, so far the move hasn’t seemed to pan out for Boston, as they have given up 13 runs in its first two games.
The Yanks on the other hand have opted for run production, and boast a line up of perennial hitters with Granderson, A-Rod, Jeter, Teixeira and Johnson. So far it may be working as the team has combined for 21 hits, including three home runs, and seven doubles in two games.
The odds makers have the Red Sox as –1 ½ -point favorites with a game total of 10 runs.
I think game three will take on a much different look as the both teams bring out what may possibly be the best of their starting rotations.
Expect the Red Sox to win, claiming the first season series over New York and the UNDER.
