There hasn’t been a whole lot of happiness for Orioles fans this season. However, things started to turn around when the Orioles became the last team to post its first home victory as they shocked the Yankees by edging out a 5-4 win in game one on Tuesday. It was the Orioles first string of consecutive victories in 2010. But the honeymoon was over as they followed with an 8-3 loss in game two. Yanks starter C.C. Sabathia wasn’t especially sharp, but he didn’t have to be as the Yankees tallied a season-high 15 hits. New York scored twice in the first inning and tacked on three more runs in the second before Robinson Cano homered–his sixth of the season–in the third to make it 6-0. In the Baltimore sixth, Miguel Tejada, who finished with two hits and an RBI, doubled and scored on a sacrifice fly by Nolan Reimold.
Looking to get back in the mix the Orioles will put 23-year old Brian Matusz on the mound in game three. Matusz has allowed three runs or less in three of his four starts, with 27 strikeouts in 24 2/3 innings. Despite playing for the hapless Orioles, he is a solid starter. He allowed three earned runs during Saturday’s 7-6 loss to the Red Sox. He took a 3-1 lead into the seventh, but was pulled after a walk and a hit. Both runners scored on Marco Scutaro’s home run. Matusz gave up six hits and three walks, striking out four. The lefty is 1-0 with a 1.29 ERA in his career against the Yankees.
A.J. Burnett will start for the pinstripes. After starting the season with two wins in three starts, the veteran righty recorded his second no decision of 2010 in his fourth. The 33-year old went 6 1/3 innings against the Angels on Friday night, giving up four runs on nine hits. It marked the most runs Burnett had given up in four starts. Burnett gave up four hits and a walk in the third, which allowed three runs to score and give the Angels a 4-3 lead. He has been pretty solid this year, posting a 3.20 ERA with 16 strikeouts. Burnett went 2-1 with a 5.84 ERA in four starts against the O’s last season and is 9-2 overall in 13 career starts.
The odds makers have the Yankees as –1 ½ -point favorites with a game total of 8 ½ runs.
I just can’t see the Orioles taking two from the Yanks. The party’s over go with New York and the OVER.
