Pitching Probables: Jason Hammel vs. Huroki Kuroda

This is a big divisional series, the winner of which might still be in the hunt for the playoffs because at this point there is little margin for error for either side. Colorado was shutout by Clayton Kershaw last night but that his nothing new, he has owned them all season. Meanwhile the last time they saw Huroki Kuroda they scored 7 against him in only 4 innnings while cruising to an 11-3 victory. Carlos Gonzalez did the major damage in that one and they could use a return to form. His average is still high but he has been pretty invisible the last two series. On the bump Jason Hammel has been very solid this season and owns a 2.25 ERA career against the Dodgers but he hasn’t faced them this season.

Last night Clayton Kershaw might have saved the Dodgers season. Not only did he halt a losing streak but he helped L.A. make a statement that they are not giving up so easily. The question is whether Kuroda can back him up this evening. Only one of these teams (maybe none) can really make a run at the playoffs and the Dodgers can not wait around any longer. Kuroda’s numbers are solid all the way around but he will need some offensive support. I was watching the game last night and they quoted a shocking stat from L.A.’s recent series against Atlanta. They did not get a single hit with men in scoring position (0 for 23). Amazing. Last night they only stranded 4 runners. Its is a simple formula for the Dodgers. When they hit they win.

Prediction: L.A. has been Jekyll and Hyde all year so what do you get. I think both starters will be long gone when this one is decided and like Colorado to thwart the Dodgers attempt at resurgence. The best play is probably the over.

Los Angeles is -123 and the O/U is 7.
