Cincinatti was the victor last night after hammering previously untouchable Phillies closer Ryan Madson in the top of the ninth inning of a tie game. Madson had only given up one run all season long before last night but the Reds tagged him for three with inconsistent outfielder Jay Bruce providing the fireworks with a bases loaded double. The win evened the season series between these teams that met in last year’s playoffs. It also ended the Reds 8 game losing streak against the Philliess. Keeping that streak going is going to be difficult with today’s pitching matchup definitely favouring Philadelphia. Reds starter Travis Wood has been much better of late posting a 3.00 ERA in his last three outings. More importantly he has been getting support from his lineup which has been scoring 6 runs a contest in support of him of late. If they can score that many against Roy Halladay I will be surprised.
Even though they lost last night the Philadelphia Phillies have owned the Reds of late. The sharpest measure of their dominance was Roy Halladay’s playoff opening no hitter last fall. Halladay is the most dominant starter in the majors in my opinion and he is the best reason to think the Phillies rebound this evening after their closer had a meltdown last night. The way he has been pitching another complete game is not out of the questions for the major league leader in the category. Last July these same starters faced off in what wound up being an epic pitcher’s duel with Wood yielding just a single hit over nine innings in a game the Reds lost in extra frames. I am doubtful he can master the Phillies lineup similarly again this evening.
The odds makers have the Philadelphia Phillies as a -1.5 point favorite with an run total of 7.

Prediction: Truth be told I don’t think I would ever bet against Halladay but even if I was entertaining the ideas I wouldn’t do it today. He always puts his team in a good spot to win and has a great track record against the Reds.
Score Prediction: Philadelphia – 6, Cincinnati – 2
