Philly’s success this year is coming from a not-so-familiar place: their pitching staff. The Phillies, who are known around the country for their big hitters, are winning games by eliminating the opposing team’s offense, and are leading the majors in ERA and quality starts. This should bode well against a not so impressive San Francisco lineup.
Left-hander Cole Hamels will take the mound against the Giants in Game 2, a team that he beat up on in his previous game against; when he went 7.2 innings allowing two runs on just six hits. The 27-year-old is having a surprisingly good year (12-6), and has an ERA of 2.62 with 145 strikeouts.
Countering for San Francisco will be 26-year-old Matt Cain. The right-hander, who has been rather pedestrian throughout his career, is having a relatively average season. His ERA is 3.10, which is respectable, to go along with 122 strikeouts.
Cain has been cold as of late though, and in his last start he was taken out in the sixth inning after giving up five runs. However, he has had success against the Phillies, and in his only start against the NL East leaders, he went seven solid innings and allowed just a single run on just four hits.
The offense for both teams have been average, and the Giants, like always, are leading the bottom of the league statistically on offense, but are still winning games consistently. The Boys from the Bay have proven year in and year out that they don’t need offense like most teams do, because they have one of the best pitching staffs in all of baseball.
The Phillies on the other hand are used to being lights out offensively, but this year, their focus has been shifted to their pitching staff, and this has turned out well for them.
Both of these teams are flying high at the moment, and this Game could be a barometer of who will represent the NL in this year’s Fall Classic.
The odds makers have the San Francisco Giants as a -1.5 point favorite with an run total of 6.5.
Matt’s Free Prediction: Philadelphia – I just don’t expect Cain to hold down the Phillies offense quite like Hamels will be able to do against the Giants. The pitching matchup is the deciding factor in this game, and usually when that’s the case in a Giants game, it goes in the Giants favor, but not this time.
