Nothing like a couple of first place teams on a hot summer midweek night. Even better is the fact that they faced off last fall in the playoffs adding some juice to a series between the National League’s top contenders for the pennant in 2011. The series didn’t start so well for the San Francisco Giants who were handled easily by the Philadelphia Phillies last night 7-2. Starter Barry Zito hung on for seven innings after getting blasted in the first but the real problem was that they scratched out only 3 hits against promising rookie Vance Worley. It won’t get much easier tonight so they will have to rely upon a superlative pitching performance from Tim Lincecum, again. Sometimes even that isn’t enough as they have scored more than three runs in support of “the Freak”, just 3 times in his last ten starts. It is amazing the Giants are even in first place given their offensive struggles.

The Philadelphia Phillies are looking unstoppable lately. They have won 7 of 10 mixing a combination of dominant pitching with occasional slugging. Speaking of dominating, Cole Hamels has been superb this season. 6 times in his last 10 starts he has pitched 8 innings and given up 2 runs or less and the Phils are winning two thirds of his starts. Record wise he has not been amazing against San Fran but he has generally pitched well and he will likely have to again this evening with Tim Lincecum dealing for the Giants. The Phillies have transformed themselves from a hitting dominated club to pitching but don’t forget that they still have lots of potent bats. Did you know that Ryan Howard leads the NL in RBIs? He bats over .300 for his career against Lincecum and half his hits are homers.
The odds makers have the Philadelphia Phillies as a -1.5 point favorite with an run total of 7.
Prediction: This should definitely be a low scoring affair and it is hard not to like the Phillies who have momentum and something to prove. Back to back CGs from the staff are definitely a possibility.
