Tonight is an intriguing start for a series that might be playoff preview between the San Francisco Giants and Atlanta Braves. Starter Madison Bumgarner got off to a bad start this season but has been much better lately and was especially sharp in his more recent outing against the Pittsburgh Pirates (7 shutout innings). In his most recent outing against the Braves he lost back in April, which is the last time these two clubs squared off. The Giants who have struggled to score runs all season long especially struggle with Bumgarner on the hill – they are averaging only three runs of support. It doesn’t get any easier with their new acquisition, Carlos Beltran, currently on the shelf.

The Atlanta Braves enter the series off of back to back losses against the lowly Chicago Cubs Saturday and Sunday. However, they can take some comfort from the fact that they swept the Giants on the road in their only meeting back in April. Hudson was a winner in that series and has been impressive of late with seven straight starts of 7 innings or more and three runs or less given up. The Braves are 5-2 over that stretch. Now that Dan Uggla’s hit streak is over things can get back to normal in Hot-Lanta where the Braves are very well positioned to make the playoffs The Braves win with their formula of strong starting pitching and a lights out bullpen – same as the Giants.
Prediction: Probably not a whole lot of runs being scored tonight. This will make it feel like it is October already.
The odds makers have the Atlanta Braves as a -1.5 point favorite with an run total of 6.5.
