Pitching Probables: Chris Carpenter vs Jordan Zimmerman

What is up with the Cardinals?  They are trying to chase down the Reds but just dropped two of three in Pittsbugh and they have won only three of their last ten.  It was the Reds that were supposed to fade right?  But when you are trying to break out of a funk a dominating pitching performance can help and that is what I expect tonight.  Chris Carpenter is showing no signs of late season fatigue plus he has a tidy 6-1 record against Nats for his career.  In fact St. Louis is 13-2 against the Nats since 2008 proving that they can and usually do beat bad teams.  Their current run of bad play has been mostly due to a lineup that other than Albert Pujols, who is challenging for an elusive triple crown, has been rather punchless of late.

Washington meanwhile has also won only three of their last ten but that isn’t really surprising.  This team is pretty lifeless right now, I think the loss of Stephen Strasburg sucked all the energy out of a team that was a nice story early on but was never really  in contention anyway.  It is going to be hard to back these guys as we head into the season’s final month.  One bright spot could be tonight’s starter Jordan ‘The Other” Zimmerman”.  He has shown some promise in the past but is coming off major arm surgery so who knows what he will deliver.  Talent wise he is definitely behind Strasburg but they had high hopes before the injury.  Hard to pick him tonight in this matchup knowing he won’t go deep into the game and the opposition.

Prediction:  Very good value on Washington but you can’t back them tonight unless you are big time gambler. No situations to be found that back the Nats

Washington is +180 and the O/U is 8.
