2010 Bowling Green Strengths:
The Falcons have a strong stable of running backs and should be vastly improved in that area. Whether they lose a degree of offensive balance because the passing game falls off is another story.
2010 Bowling Green Weaknesses:
Who will lead the Falcons’ offense? That goes beyond identifying a starting quarterback. Bowling Green is missing most of the firepower that made it bowl-worthy in each of the past two seasons.
2010 Bowling Green Offense:
For the better part of four years, the Falcons’ offense could best be summarized this way: Tyler Sheehan to Freddie Barnes. Sheehan and Barnes – who led the nation in catches (155 with 19 touchdowns) in 2009 – are gone. So, the Falcons are shaping a new identity, although that sketch can’t be drawn until the quarterback derby is resolved. Four candidates – redshirt sophomore Aaron Pankratz; redshirt freshmen Matt Schilz and Kellen Pagel, and true freshman Caleb Watkins – were asked to divide the snaps almost equally during spring drills. When the dust settled, coach Dave Clawson was still searching for an answer. Junior college transfer wide receiver Kamar Jorden had 10 catches in the spring game. After redshirting last season, he knows the offense and has worked with most of the quarterback candidates. The Falcons like their talent at receiver, headlined by Adrian Hodges, who had 46 catches last season. The Falcons can’t simply turn to the running game as a crutch. Senior running back Willie Geter is capable and has starting experience, but Bowling Green managed only 86.5 rushing yards per game (1l4th in the nation) in ‘og. Geter isn’t a betweenthe- tackles runner either.
2010 Bowling Green Defense:
All three linebackers and three of four starters in the secondary have to be replaced. That puts pressure squarely on the shoulders of Bowling Green’s tested defensive line, a much-maligned crew in 200g, but identified by Clawson as this year’s unquestioned defensive asset. Even if that’s not the case, it should be soon. There are seven lettermen back, many of whom are sophomores or redshirt freshmen. Angelo Magnone and Darius Smith are seniors; sophomores Chris Jones and Jordon Roussos are up-andcomers. Tim Moore, a converted safety, and Eugene Fells, last season’s top backup linebacker, might argue that the linebacker unit has ample experience. But until the three starters have played together as a corps, it wears that label. Returning starting cornerback Adrien Spencer had an interception return for a touchdown last season but is far from an All-MAC cornerback. The secondary isn’t lacking talent, though the inexperience of the group could spell doom against early opponents.
2010 Bowling Green Special Teams:
The Falcons are without their top punter, kicker and primary kick and punt returners from 200g. Jerry Phillips, the frontrunner at kicker, was the starter last season before he was sidelined by injury for the final six games. He hit 8 of 13 field-goal attempts in 2009. Phillips is also in the running for the punting job. Willie Geter and true freshman Jerry Gates are likely to lead the return candidates – another area in which Freddie Barnes excelled – but Clawson might not entrust those duties to his younger players.

2010 Bowling Green Predictions:
The Falcons have a huge nucleus to replace. Getting back to a bowl game would be Bowling Green’s ceiling in 2010. The schedule, more difficult than it was last season, represents a big obstacle.
