A.J. Allmendinger 2009 Recap & Review

The 2009 season marked a year of transition for Allmendinger, who went from fighting for his livelihood to solidifying himself and his team’s future. Just three seasons ago, he was a brand new driver to stock car racing, driving for a team in its first year of existence. The growing pains were painfully obvious, as Allmendinger missed 19 races in 2007 and was temporarily replaced in 2008 after missing the first three events. This year, Allmendinger was faced with a similar challenge to start the season and finally beat the qualifying gremlins. This was the year that this driver proved that he belongs in NASCAR, as he ran more consistently from week to week and in the end and tripled his previous best top 10 count.

A.J. Allmendinger 2010 Preview & Prediction

Considering all he dealt with in 2009 — the instability and stress of a new team, lack of sponsorship, a crew chief change midseason, racing pay-free for a time, mergers and manufacturer changes, not to mention a DUI arrest — last year should be considered a success for former open-wheel star AJ Allmendinger. After two seasons at Red Bull Racing plagued with DNQs and DNFs, Allmendinger made the switch to newly named Richard Petty Motorsports after a merger at the start of last season.

With sponsorship in question, the team was slated to run a limited number of races, but with a strong start to the year came extra funding. Yet as soon as long-term contracts were signed, the adrenaline dropped off along with performance, causing a midseason slump where crew chief Sammy Johns was bumped in favor of Mike Shiplett. But the team still couldn’t shake off the funk, especially following a September announcement of a second merger — this time to Yates Racing — and Allmendinger wound up a disappointing 24th in points. In the process, he earned the ugly distinction as the first driver to run all 36 races without leading a lap since Kenny Wallace in 2003.

One thing that might play to AJA’s advantage in 2010 is the fact that he ended the season driving three races in a Ford, scoring two top 10s in the process. The merger also provides Shiplett and Co. with better equipment, horsepower and resources from new “partner” Roush Fenway Racing, looking to turn them into the equivalent of Hendrick’s “B” level success story: Stewart-Haas Racing.

But just because he got a head start doesn’t mean that this year will be smooth sailing for Allmendinger, who is on probation with RPM throughout 2010 following his DUI arrest last October. And while his initial runs looked promising, as a group the Fords remain far behind Chevy and Toyota. Add in Kasey Kahne’s likely departure at the end of ’10, and chaos will continue to surround the King’s stable. So while Allmendinger has the talent to run in the top-10 range, looking for that consistently all year is a stretch at best.
