Martin Truex Jr. 2009 Recap & Review
On the eve of the 2009 season, a surprise merger between Dale Earnhardt, Inc. and Chip Ganassi caught Truex and his No. 1 team completely by surprise. Suddenly, they were forced to integrate with a brand new team, with two number one drivers in Montoya and Truex forced to work together. The two wildly different personalities never gelled, and information sharing seemed to be their weakness as the No. 1 team fell far behind the successes of the No. 42.
Seeing the writing on the wall, Truex quickly started to look elsewhere for 2010 as both the organization and personnel changed dramatically around him. That additional distraction helped trigger a season-long slump for the team; by the time they got their act together in the final few races of the year, Truex had signed on elsewhere for 2010 and they were merely finishing up as “lame ducks” after just one top 5 finish — a career-low for the four-year Sprint Cup veteran. His three poles were the lone highlight in what became a year to forget for everyone involved with the Bass Pro Shops Chevrolet.
Martin Truex Jr. 2010 Preview & Prediction
There’s something to be said for making a fresh start in NASCAR, and for Martin Truex Jr., the time is now. After three full-time seasons piloting the No. 1 car for Dale Earnhardt, Inc., Truex’s ride came under the ownership of newly formed Earnhardt Ganassi Racing last year, pairing him with Juan Pablo Montoya. While Montoya made the Chase and finished eighth in points, Truex’s final ranking of 23rd was the lowest of his Cup career, marked by five DNFs and a handful of other races ruined by wrecks. Although he had three poles, Truex managed only one top-5 finish, at Phoenix in the penultimate race of the season — but by then, he was a lame duck driver, recognizing that his position as No. 1 driver on the team had permanently fallen by the wayside.
Rumblings of Truex’s possible move to Michael Waltrip Racing started early last year, though he remained tight-lipped about his pending decision at the time. But the fact that younger brother Ryan had already partnered with MWR to run the NASCAR Camping World East Series turned out to be a subtle indicator. It took a few more months for plans to firm up, but in July the deal was finally announced with great fanfare: Truex is now the full-time driver of Waltrip’s NAPA Toyota in 2010, changing it from the No. 55 to 56 — a number Truex’s racing family has used for three generations.
NAPA remains the sponsor, while Waltrip will run the Bud Shootout and the Daytona 500 in the No. 55 car. Veteran Pat Tryson, most recently with Kurt Busch at Penske Racing, will serve as crew chief, bringing more than 10 years of Cup experience to the job. However, Tryson was not legally allowed out of his contract and into the MWR shop until after the new year, meaning he only went to work on January 4.
Considering the upward trend of MWR’s other two cars — driven by David Reutimann and Marcos Ambrose — optimism runs high that the 29-year-old can return to 2007 form, when he won his only Cup race (Dover) while earning a berth in the Chase. As with any new venture, it may take time for all the components to mesh, but Truex believes his new team is full of promise.
