Despite a shaky Fall, the Brian Vickers train is still on track and steaming along nicely. There is no doubt that the dismal performance during the Chase was disappointing, but the season, on the whole, was a rousing success. Significant progress continues to be made by both the driver and team each year as they continue to build themselves into a weekly contender for wins and the series championship. Remember, following a difficult first year for Vickers with the new-to-the-sport Toyota and Team Red Bull in 2007 — when just qualifying for races was a struggle — Vickers finished a semi-respectable 19th in points for 2008. So, that is 38th, 19th, and now 12th in points for the young veteran in the first three years. Put those results on a graph, and you have a very impressive visual aid that continues to show a slow, steady uphill climb to the top.

Breaking into the elite top-12 of the NASCAR Sprint Cup Series is no small matter and one that Brian Vickers and his team, led by first-year crew chief Ryan Pemberton, can be proud of. This season, he proved that he belongs with the series’ elite, and left little doubt that Team Red Bull is capable of competing up front.

Brian Vickers 2010 Preview & Prediction

The good news for Brian Vickers heading into 2010 is that he won a race (Michigan) in 2009 — an important first in the Cup Series for Team Red Bull — and made the Chase for the Championship for the first time ever, finishing the season 12th in points. The bad news is that, once in the Chase, the No. 83 team’s performance dropped off precipitously. Vickers did not post a single top-10 finish in the postseason and had five finishes of 25th or worse, including two DNFs, to post the fewest points in the six-year history of the Chase format. Still, simply making the playoffs was an admirable accomplishment for Red Bull, which has only been competing at the Cup level for three years.

But after a late-season fade, which team will pop up in 2010 — the one that charged into the postseason or the one that disappeared within it? At first glance, you’d think the achievement should provide plenty of confidence and momentum heading into this year. Vickers scored six poles in 2009, second only to Mark Martin — proof that the Red Bull Toyotas have sufficient horsepower and speed.

Crew chief Ryan Pemberton returns for a second season with nearly all of the crew intact, and funding remains secure. An impressive stretch run leading up to the Chase, with seven top-10 finishes in nine races, demonstrated flashes of the ability needed to compete for a title this year. Also, the experience of being in the ’09 Chase will serve Vickers well if he can make it back to the playoffs again in 2010.

That’s just easier said than done. The No. 83 team remains frustratingly inconsistent, borne out by five total DNFs, and still struggles on short tracks and road courses. The team also acts as virtually a single-car effort, with open-wheel convert Scott Speed spending most of last year outside the top 35 in owner points and struggling even to qualify. In a season where nearly two dozen teams have legitimate Chase aspirations, warning signs are everywhere for a post-Chase letdown — although confidence remains high in the Red Bull camp.
