NHL Power Rankings- January 21st

After winning four straight games, Washington has vaulted back into the points lead in the Eastern Conference with 68. Over in the Western Conference San Jose continues their winning ways and leads in points with 74. Ottawa and Colorado each have a four game winning streak as well, improving their overall position in their respective division.

The Capitals recent winning streak has opened up a dominating 16 point lead over Atlanta in the Southeast division. New Jersey is ahead of Pittsburgh by four points in the Atlantic division as that race is beginning to really heat up. In the Northeast division, Buffalo’s lead over the Senators is 10 points and 13 points over Boston.

In the West, the Sharks have a comfortable 13 point lead over Phoenix in the Pacific division. The Avalanche has opened up a two point lead over Vancouver and a four point lead over Calgary in the very competitive Northwest division. In the Central division Chicago has an 11 point lead over Nashville with Detroit sitting 16 points back.

The following are my top four teams in the league along with their opening and current odds to win it all.

San Jose Sharks Odds to win the Stanley Cup: Open 10/1 Current 11/2

The Sharks are currently 33-10-8 with a total of 74 points. They are 7-2-1 in their last 10 games and have won three straight. Last Saturday they beat the Oilers 4-2 with Devin Setoguchi scoring two goals less than two minutes apart to lead the way. In a 9-1 romp over the Flames eight different players scored a goal. They ran their streak to three with a 5-1 win over the Kings. Patrick Marleau and Ryane Clowe each had a pair of goals in the win. Marleau is the leading goal scorer with 34 and Joe Thornton leads the way with 51 assists. Evgeni Nabokov has a 2.20 GAA (goals against average).

Washington Capitals Odds to win the Stanley Cup: Open 10/1 Current 6/1

The Capitals are currently 31-12-4 with a total of 68 points. They are 7-3 in their last 10 and are riding a four game winning streak. In their game against Maple Leafs they scored the first four goals and went on to win 6-1. In their next game they took a 3-2 lead into the third period and came away with a hard fought 5-3 win over the Flyers. G Jose Theodore got the start against the Red Wings and turned away 44 shots in the 3-2 win. Alex Ovechkin is the leading goal scorer with 30 and Mike Green leads in assist with 38. Theodore has a 2.85 GAA.

Chicago Blackhawks Odds to win the Stanley Cup: Open 12/1 Current 5/1

The Blackhawks are currently 34-12-4 with a total of 72 points. They are 7-2-1 in their last 10 games. In the first game of a home and home series with the Blue Jackets, they struck first blood with 3-0 shutout. G Christobal Huet stopped 24 shots to record his fourth shutout of the season. In their next game, Chicago was on the plus side of a 6-5 score to sweep the two game series. Their next game ended in an overtime shootout with them coming out on top 4-3 over the Red Wings. Patrick Kane leads the team in goals with 20 and assists with 36. Duncan Keith has 35 assists and Huet’s GAA is 2.17.

New Jersey Devils Odds to Win the Stanley Cup: Open 15/1 Current 15/1

The Devils are currently 33-14-1 with a total of 67 points. They are 5-5 in their last 10 games. Last Saturday they fell to the Avalanche 1-3, scoring their only goal of the game early in the third period. They lost their third straight game after getting shutout 0-4 by the Islanders. They were able to stop the bleeding by pitching a shutout of their own with a 2-0 win over the Panthers. It was Martin Broduer’s seventh shutout of the season. Zach Parise leads the team in goals with 20 and is tied with Jamie Langenbrunner with 28 assists. Martin Brodeur has a GAA of 2.15.
