2009-2010 Fresno State Season Preview
The resilience of Steve Cleveland isn’t questioned in coaching corners. Entering his fifth season with the previously troubled Bulldogs program, the man with a dozen years of sideline experience overall is still trying to get it right.
A good recruiting class – particularly in the early signing period – and three returning starters with plenty of promise have Cleveland feeling optimistic.
Fresno State finished last in the WAC a year ago, losing all eight conference games on the road, as Cleveland tried to find the right combinations with a limited bench. But now a younger group takes over with a grinding 34-game schedule of experience still fresh on the minds of sophomore Paul George and Sylvester Seay, who prepares for a big sendoff senior season.
Joining this talented twosome is fellow returning starter Nedeljko Golubovic, and Mychal Ladd, who started 15 games, giving Cleveland a good nucleus with only one senior in the bunch.
Perhaps the biggest reason for optimism will arrive in the form of6-8 freshman big man Greg Smith. He could have gone virtually anywhere – offers from Kansas and Arizona, among others – but chose the Bulldogs, becoming Fresno State’s most heralded recruit in years. He looks like an instant double-double in the WAC and will make Fresno State one of the toughest interior teams around.
The team’s biggest problem would appear to be a lack of guards.
The loss of Dwight O’Neil means lots of pressure on Ladd and George, who now figures to spend most of his time in the backcourt, where there figures to be plenty of chances for newcomers to play. JC transfer Steven Shepp appears to be the most likely candidate to see significant minutes and could be the starting point guard from the first day of practice.
