Philadelphia 76ers 2010 Preview & Prediction

Philadelphia is a basketball city. Playgrounds dot the landscape. The city has produced some of the grittiest men ever to play the game. There is tough, and then there is Philly tough. But it has been a decade since the city’s beloved professional basketball franchise, the 76ers, last went to the NBA Finals, and the fan base that used to pack the arena has become apathetic. There has been front office upheaval and coaching change after coaching change after coaching change – seven in all since Larry Brown left town after the 2002-03 season. Last season, the Sixers won only 12 games at home and finished with the third-worst record in the Eastern Conference. Into this mess in May walked Doug Collins. At 58, Collins decided to resume his coaching career after a successful run as a basketball announcer for TNT. He came back to Philadelphia because he says, at heart, he is and always will be a Sixer. The Sixers made Collins the NO.1 overall pick in the 1973 draft, and he played all eight of his NBA seasons in Philadelphia. He understands the city and the fans and knows there is a lot of work to do to get people to buy back into the franchise.

Philadelphia 76ers Coach: Doug Collins (1st season)

Philadelphia 76ers Projected Starters: PG Jrue Holiday, SG Andre Iguodala, SF Thaddeus Young, PF Elton Brand, C Spencer Hawes.

Philadelphia 76ers Key Additions: C Tony Battie, C Spencer Hawes.

Philadelphia 76ers Key Losses: G Allen Iverson.

2010 Philadelphia 76ers Point Guards:

Jrue Holiday will be the Sixers’ floor general. Holiday started 51 games last season. He averaged 8.0 points, 3.8 assists and 1.08 steals a game. As a first-year player, he showed a lot of poise. He had to make some adjustments just like most rookies. But Holiday demonstrated that he could run the offense. He’s also a good on-ball defender. He averaged 24.2 minutes a game. His minutes could go up this season. It’s possible rookie Evan Turner could spell the Sixers young guard at times. Lou Williams could even move back there for a period of time to handle the ballhandling chores. They’re all capable of stepping in to give him a blow. The big thing is the Sixers have a young point guard who should be around for a long time.

2010 Philadelphia 76ers Off Guards:

Evan Turner should eventually give the Sixers a legitimate shooting guard. Turner is coming off a brilliant career at Ohio State. The 6-7 guard has the ability to hit the midrange shot. He has good overall range on his jumpshot, too. Turner will team with Holiday in the backcourt. Lou Williams should be a good player off the bench. Williams is· explosive offensively. He averaged 14.0 points a game last season. He loves to play the up-tempo style. He can take the ball to the basket or hit from threepoint range. Andre Iguodala will see some action at shooting guard. Iguodala is more suited at small forward. He can be effective at this position based on the matchups. He should be able to use his size and quickness. He’s not a great three-point shooter. He shot just 31 percent from beyond the arc. Willie Green, a seven-year veteran, will contribute as a reserve. Green has started and come off the bench in his career. He seems to be comfortable in either role. Jodie Meeks could provide an additional scoring punch. Meeks, a 6-4 guard, is a good long-range shooter.

2010 Philadelphia 76ers Small Forwards:

Andre Iguodala is one of the best small forwards in the NBA. Iguodala can grab the rebound, take the ball the length of the court and dunk on just about anybody. He’s easily one of the league’s most exciting players. If Iguodala can improve his outside shooting, he could be really dangerous. Defensively, he has great anticipation. He knows how to play the passing lanes. Thaddeus Young can play this position, too. Young can take his man off the dribble. He doesn’t need a screen. He has a nice touch from the perimeter. He’s also good around the basket. He averaged 13.8 points a game. The Sixers made a big trade this summer sending center Samuel Dalembert to the Sacramento Kings for 6-7 forward Andres Nocioni and 7-1 center Spencer Hawes. Nocioni is a blue-collar player. He plays good defense, rebounds and runs the floor. He also brings a sense of toughness to the frontcourt. Jason Kapono could grab some minutes off the bench. Kapono shot 41.9 percent from three-point range. This is a rich, deep position for Philly.

2010 Philadelphia 76ers Power Forwards:

Elton Brand could make a big difference up front. Brand averaged 30.2 minutes a game. He tallied 13.1 points and 6.1 rebounds a game. He seems to be gaining more confidence in his game. If Brand can increase his numbers, that would be a huge plus. Fans have been waiting for him to play at a high level. This could be the year. Collins is close to the Duke basketball culture with his son, Chris, playing and then coaching there. He’ll be good for Brand’s productivity. Thaddeus Young has played quite a bit at power forward. Although Young doesn’t have the bulk that most players have at this position, he does have the skills and quickness, which make him a difficult player to guard. He can put the ball on the floor and explode to the basket. He can step outside and hit the big shot, too. Marreese Speights could be a player to watch. Speights, a 6-10, 245-pounder, can shoot from the perimeter. He can play inside and score as well. Be’s another one of the Sixers young players who has been gradually developing into a solid player. Jason Smith has shown flashes of brilliance. Smith’s biggest asset is his mid-range shot. He moves well without the ball. Tony Battie was acquired over the summer. Battie should give the Sixers some much needed veteran leadership and experience. He has been in the league for 12 years. He’s a good defender and rebounder.

2010 Philadelphia 76ers Centers:

Like power forward, the Sixers will have a few players who can help them at center. Marreese Speights is a big body. Speights can take up a lot of space in the middle. He has the strength and power to battle most players in this league. Spencer Hawes will see plenty of playing time. Hawes, a 7-1, 245-pounder, has great length and size. He gives the Sixers a player who can score in the post. He’s a pretty good rebounder, too. Tony Battie ~ould move from power forward to play in the middle. Battie knows how to play both positions. He’s also a good shot-blocker.
