After being blown out in games three and four in Boston, Vancouver game back to their home ice, narrowly escaping with a 1-0 win in Game 5.
Maxim Lapierre scored the game winning goal for Vancouver with 15:25 remaining, a goal that would put Vancouver up 3-2 in the series heading back to Boston for Game 6, and if they should fail to pout the Bruins away, come right back home for Game 7, where they are undefeated.
Goalie Roberto Luongo stopped 31 shots in Vancouver’s shutout win, it was Luongo’s fourth of the playoffs and second in the Stanley Cup Finals, after he gave up 12 goals in just under four periods during their last two games in Boston.
Luongo was pulled during Game 4 in Boston, but head coach Alain Vigneault decided to give him another chance at home where he has been dominant throughout the series.
In total, the Canucks have scored just six goals during the five Stanley Cup Finals games, but are up no just one victory away from a chance to hoist the oldest trophy in North American sports with a win in Boston, something they have been far from achieving through their first two games at TD Garden.
Boston’s road woes in the series can’t be blamed entirely on goalie Tim Thomas, as Thomas has only received two goals of support from his team in their three losses at the Canucks.
Despite all the talk of their road defeats, Boston has to be the favorite going back home, where they have outscored Vancouver 12-1 in their two series’ wins, including a thrashing of Luongo in game three when they slipped eight goals past him in 40 minutes of play.
This series has been the story of the home team throughout the five games, and Monday’s contest doesn’t look to be any different, as Thomas has been truly dominant in Boston with 78 saves and just a single goal allowed.
Even though Boston is just one defeat away from giving up their chance at the Stanley Cup, they should be feeling up to the challenge to win the final two games of the series, as their defense has shown that they are the real deal. They have held the number one ranked scoring team throughout the regular season to 1.2 goals per game. If they continue this they have just as good of a chance as Vancouver does at winning one game.
The odds makers have the Boston Bruins as a -1.5 point favorite with an over/under of 5.
Matt’s Free Prediction: Boston – The home team is undefeated throughout the series. Don’t expect this to change one bit, as Boston will surely force a game seven showing why, yet again, that defense is still more important than offense.
