The Sharks led this series by three games to none, but the Red Wings have fought back to win the last three contests and force a seventh game. It is the third time in the last 13 months that a best-of-seven series in the NHL playoffs has seen one team rally from being down 0-3 to force a seventh contest.
In the last round of these playoffs, the Chicago Blackhawks lost the first three games to Vancouver but rallied to force a seventh game. The Canucks won that game at home to win the series though. Last season in the Eastern Conference semifinals, the Philadelphia Flyers rallied from a 0-3 deficit to win their series with the Boston Bruins.
The Red Wings have become just the eighth team in Stanley Cup playoffs history to force a Game 7 after trailing 0-3 in a series. Three times in the seven previous instances, the team that lost the first three games came all the way back to win: the Flyers from last season; the 1975 New York Islanders; and the 1942 Toronto Maple Leafs.
Detroit is 3-1 in Game 7s in the second round of the playoffs, with their most memorable win coming in 1996 when Steve Yzerman helped defeat St. Louis in double overtime. Detroit’s current head coach, Mike Babcock, is now tied with Chicago’s Joel Quenneville for ninth all-time in playoff victories with 70.
For the Sharks to avoid defeat, they must see a better performance from Patrick Marleau, who has not scored a single point in this entire series. As a team, the Sharks must to a better job of taking advantage of their face-off wins by being more accurate in their shooting. San Jose won 59 percent of the face-offs taken in Game 6, yet they generated 25 shots on goal while having 17 attempts blocked and 10 shots miss the net entirely.
The Sharks also hope to have Ryan Clowe back in the lineup after he missed Game 6 with an upper body injury. Detroit won’t know the status of Johan Franzen, who missed their last contest, until before game time on Thursday.
The odds makers have the San Jose Sharks as a -1.5 point favorite with an over/under of 5.5.

Matt’s Free Prediction: Red Wings – Despite the Sharks having included Antti Niemi, last year’s Stanley Cup winning goaltender, to their line-up, they are still a team that lacks that winning experience the Red Wings have on their roster. All of the pressure will be on the Sharks, allowing Detroit to skate more aggressively with the puck.
