The notoriously slow starting San Diego Chargers kick off their 2011 NFL season on Sunday against a revamped Minnesota Vikings team. The Chargers will be looking to erase memories of past dreadful Septembers and the Minnesota Vikings will try to impress with their born again pivot – Donovan McNabb.

Not a whole lot went right for the Minnesota Vikings last season. Heck, Joe Webb was their starting quarterback toward the end of the season. Needing to do something to fill the void left by Brett F*&% (I can’t say his name); Minnesota took a chance and got Donovan McNabb. A ton of 2010 negativity will hopefully be erased by Mr. McNabb’s presence. The Vikings still have the best running back in the game and an OK defense. The trio of Percy Harvin, Bernard Berian and Michael Jenkins scare nobody however!
If there is one thing that the San Diego Chargers have become known for it is brutal Septembers. Last season it was injuries, contract disputes, insane Special Teams gaffes and overall bad luck that resulted in their worst start ever. The Chargers missed the playoffs despite having the best offense and best defense in the league!
Philip Rivers is going to have a monster season. He was great last year even without Vincent Jackson and Antonio Gates for parts of the year. Rivers is a Stud who absolutely will air the ball out in this game against Minnesota’s sketchy corners Antoine Winfield and Cedric Griffin. It will be an aerial assault for sure!
San Diego’s running game could factor in this game as well. Ryan Matthews and Mike Tolbert will get their chance to shine in a game that will likely be over after three quarters.
Betting Outlook: San Diego is 4-1 against the spread in their last five home games, 6-2-1 against the spread in their last nine games overall, and 4-1-1 against the spread in their last six games as a favorite. Minnesota is 3-8 against the spread in their last 11 games overall, 1-6 against the spread in their last 7 games as a road underdog, and 3-9 against the spread in their last 12 road games.
The Under is intriguing in this game. The Vikings have gone under in their last four road games, 5 of their last six as an underdog, and six of their last eight games overall while the Chargers games have gone under in their last four home games, and last four as a home favorite.
The Vikings and the Chargers have good defenses but only one team has the offense to make their opposing defense look bad. San Diego, despite a rather large Spread should easily cover in this game. The Chargers have had an uncharacteristically quiet preseason but are ready to bring the noise in Week 1.
The odds makers have the San Diego Chargers as a -1.5 point favorite with an over/under of 41.5.
Pick: San Diego Chargers -9 and the Under 41 ½ points
