The AFC South is certainly up in the air! With Peyton Manning certain to sit this week and the Houston Texans having looked pretty bad in the preseason, a win by either the Titans or the Jaguars will be an important step for a franchise that has totally shifted its focus. For Tennessee, Matt Hasselbeck will enter the season as the starting quarterback and for the Jaguars, Luke McCown was named starter after David Gerrard was let go just this week.

Tennessee had one major worry going into the season – Chris Johnson’s potential holdout. With that out of the way, expect Johnson to dominate this weekend against a Jaguars defense that was brutalized last season. Johnson is a true game changer, he acts to open up the field for the passing game and he is the brightest star of this game.
Matt Hasselbeck won’t light the world on fire but his experience and sheer knowledge of the game certainly won’t hurt. With a back like Johnson, Tennessee simply needs a game manager and Hasselbeck fits that bill. Expect Kenny Britt and the Titans passing game to be OK but to be a good compliment to Chris Johnson’s running style.
Are you having a hard time figuring out the Jacksonville Jaguars? Me too! Last time they let a QB go before the start of the season the move surprisingly panned out – remember the Byron Leftwich saga? So as it stands, the Jaguars will enter the season with Luke McCown at quarterback and Maurice Jones-Drew working his way back from a serious injury. Could it be that the Jags are positioning themselves for a shot at Andrew Luck in next year’s draft?
Jacksonville offense ranked 27th last season with an unflattering 191 yards per game. To think that they are better this year without David Gerrard and Mike Sims-Walker is a pipe dream. One area that the Jags improved is their brutal defense that was 22nd versus the run and 28th versus the pass last year. LB’s Paul Posluszny and Clint Session, S Dawan Landry, DE Matt Roth and nickelback Drew Coleman were all added to bolster one of the worst units in the NFL. Despite the addition, the Jags defense gave up over 35 points per game in three of their four preseason games.
Betting Outlook: This game had the potential to be quite competitive before the Jags decided to go with the inconsistent, underwhelming Luke McCown at quarterback. On paper, Tennessee is better in absolutely every aspect of the game. Chris Johnson is better than MJD and Matt Hasselbeck is miles ahead of Luke McCown. Take the visitors in this one as the Jaguars start what is going to be a very, very long season.
The odds makers have the Jacksonville Jaguars as a -1.5 point favorite with an over/under of 37.
Pick: Tennessee Titans +1 ½
