Tennessee Titans 2010 NFL Record:6-10 Home: 3-5 Away: 3-5

Tennessee finished fourth in the AFC South last year with a 6-10 record. The Titans were 3-5 at home and 3-5 on the road. They went 2-4 in the division and 3-9 in the conference.

They failed to qualify for the postseason.

Tennessee Titans 2011 Preview

It is the start of a new era in Tennessee with head coach Mike Munchak and free agent quarterback Matt Hasselbeck being brought in to replace long-time coach Jeff Fisher and Vince Young, whose on and off-field riff drove both of them from the team. The Titans are only two seasons removed from a 13-3 record and AFC South title, but last year’s slide to 6-10 makes you believe that this season is shaping up more like a rebuilding year, rather than a return trip to their winning ways.

Hasselbeck jumped ship from the Seahawks after spending the majority of his 12-year career in Seattle. He brings a certain level of veteran leadership and stability to a team that was plagued with the up-and-down roller-coaster ride that Young brought to the table. However, the big story in training camp so far has been the play of first-round draft pick Jake Locker, as the heir apparent to Hasselbeck’s starting job. If the Titans get off to a slow start, do not be surprised to see Locker work his way into the lineup much sooner than first anticipated.

The other big story for Tennessee this preseason is the absence of All-Pro running back Chris Johnson, who has been responsible for a huge portion of this team’s offensive production over the past two seasons. Johnson is holding out for a new contract that would make him one of the highest-paid offensive players in the league. The two sides appear to be far apart on any kind of agreement, so this hold-out could easily drag into the regular season.

After selecting their quarterback of the future, the Titans turned their attention in the draft to the defensive side of the ball in an effort to improve upon a squad that was ranked 26th overall last season and 29th against the pass. They selected linebacker Akeem Ayers in the second round, defensive lineman Jurrell Casey in the third, and linebacker Colin McCarthy in the fourth. Tennessee also added defensive back’s Anthony Smith and Frank Walker as unrestricted free agents to help address the concerns in the secondary.

If Johnson’s holdout drags on for any considerable length of time, Tennessee could easily fall into an early hole with teams such as Baltimore and Pittsburgh on the schedule in the first few weeks. Even if he does return on time, a .500 record for Tennessee this season would be a major accomplishment.
