St. Louis Rams 2011 Preview
The 2010 Rams took a major step forward with seven wins after winning just six games in the previous three seasons combined. The big question for this year is where do they go from here? All indications point toward a bright future behind quarterback Sam Bradford, who turned in a very respectable rookie campaign. The first overall pick in the 2010 draft lived up to the hype by completing 60 percent of his passes for 3,512 yards and 18 TD’s. While the team’s overall offensive numbers are nothing to write home about, the pieces are in place for some dramatic improvement this season.
RB Steven Jackson turned-in another solid year with 1,241 yards rushing on 330 attempts, but the wear and tear maybe taking its toll as this was the first time in his seven years with the team his average yards per carry fell below four yards. The Rams chose to focus on the passing game in the draft by taking TE Lance Kendrick in the second round and WR’s Austin Pettis and Greg Salas in the third and fourth after Danny Amendola was the leading receiver last season with 689 yards.
Head Coach Steve Spagnuolo also used the draft try and add some depth to an improved defense that was ranked 12th in the NFL in points allowed. He used the 14th overall pick to select DE Robert Quinn from North Carolina and a bunch of later round picks to add some depth to the secondary. If this unit can continue to improve upon last year’s performance, it would take further pressure off Bradford, which would only help in his development.
St. Louis will benefit from a less than competitive division this year, but will have to improve on just three wins. It will also be tested right away with home games against Philadelphia and Baltimore sandwiched around a trip the East Rutherford to face the Giants in Week 2. Given that it might only take seven or eight victories to lock up the division, the Rams chances are as good if not better than anyone else in the NFC West.
