Seattle Seahawks
The Seahawks lost on the road to San Francisco to open the season but it wasn’t as bad as the final score made it look. A couple of return TDs in the 4th by Ted Ginn blew it open but what are the odds of that happening again. The bigger problem for Seattle is that they may be the worst team in the league and they will be facing a very angry Pittsburgh team that was humiliated in its opener.
On offense last week the Seahawks really struggled to get anything going on the ground. Their longest run of the game was by receiver Ben Obamanu (13 yards) and they managed just 64 yards in total. The passing game didn’t fare much better, netting only 155 yards after you include the 5 sacks the line gave up. Those totals were against a better than average SF defense. Pittsburgh has better personnel and will be out for blood this weekend.
Seattle has dropped its last two games to Pittsburgh, including the Super Bowl. It is hard to imagine after what we saw on Sunday that it wasn’t that long ago this was one of the better programs in the NFL. Contributing to their struggles is that they have lost their last 8 road games against AFC teams. They might have a shot busting that streak later this year at Cleveland…might.
Pittsburgh Steelers
I think we have to all admit we were shocked the way the Ravens humbled the Steelers last week. The only thing I can say is that it felt a little weird that they were playing each other the first week of the season (they haven’t bet before week 4 in any of the last 5 years). Many think the Steelers are a real contender this season and we will learn more about that from this follow up game than we might have ever been able to if they won in week 1.
Against Baltimore everything seemed to go wrong for Pittsburgh. The stat that leaps off the scoresheet is the amazing 7 turnovers including 4 lost fumbles. Lets give some credit to the Ravens but it also looked like Pittsburgh, especially QB Ben Roethlisberger, wasn’t prepared to start the season. They should have significantly less difficulty against a Seattle defense lacking elite playmakers.
Pittsburgh is one of those teams that you just know is going to bounce back. Put them against a relatively weak opponent and they are going to bounce back with a vengeance. While Seattle has struggled on the road against the AFC, the Steelers have not had the same challenge, winning 6 of their last 7 at home against the NFC including the last 4. The spread is way bigger than I thought it would be so their might be value on Seattle after all.
