The San Francisco 49ers will kick off their 2011 campaign with a home game against the Seattle Seahawks. The NFC West has been the worst division in the league in the past few years, and 2011 could be a changing point for that, and it all starts Sunday in San Francisco.

After being the favorite to win the NFC West in 2010, the 49ers literally collapsed by the pressure. They fired their head coach midseason, and now have rookie coach John Harbaugh at the head position. It will be interesting to see how he prepared his team to face division rival Seattle in the first game of the season against another former Pac-10 coach in Pete Carroll.

The Seahawks finally did what everyone thought they should have done a very long time ago: they let Matt Hassellbeck walk. The only problem with that decision was that they didn’t have a replacement set firmly in place. Instead, they went out in free agency and signed Minnesota outcast Tavaris Jackson.
Jackson was decent in Minnesota, but was never really given the chance to succeed, and the front office was trying to replace him before he ever stepped foot onto the field. If Jackson can’t get it done Charlie–who?– Whitehurst is waiting in the wings.
The 49ers on the other hand, seem intent on keeping around their losing quarterback, as Alex Smith is expected to start this game, and I couldn’t give you one reason why.
It shocks a lot of people that they keep holding on to this guy as he has never had any sustained success in the league, and most likely never will.
Both teams have strong running games though, and that could hold up the very pedestrian passing attacks.
Frank Gore is expected to take the brunt of the carries in San Francisco, and that should fair well for them, as long as he can stay healthy.
Smith threw for 255 yards and three touchdowns as the Niners hammered the Seahawks 40-21 in their last meeting, after San Francisco fell apart, leading 30-7 at the half.
The odds makers have the San Francisco 49ers as a -5 point favorite with an over/under of 37.5.
Matt’s Prediction: 49ers 14, Seattle 10 – Overall, the 49ers are flat out the better team, with the combination of their running game and hard-nosed defense. The game will be extremely boring to watch, except for watching Pete Carroll make a complete ass of himself on the sidelines. Both of these teams should be competing all year against each other, not for the division title, but for the first overall pick in the draft.
