San Francisco 49ers 2010 NFL Record: 6-10 Home: 5-3 Away: 1-7
San Francisco finished third in the NFC West last year with a 6-10 record. They were 5-3 at home and 1-7 on the road. They went 4-2 in the division and 4-8 in the conference.
They failed to qualify for the postseason.
San Francisco 49ers 2011 Preview
A sea of change has once again hit the Bay Area as Mike Singletary is out as head coach and Stanford’s Jim Harbaugh is in. While there is renewed optimism that this Harbaugh can do for the 49ers what his brother John has done for Baltimore, the harsh reality for this season is that the four-month player lockout puts this program in a deep hole for the start of the season. They are favored to win the NFC West, but do not put too much stock into that, considering that Seattle won the division last year with a 7-9 record. San Francisco could very well be a 7-9 team, but that will most likely not be good enough to win the division this year.
One of the main obstacles this team faces is trying to improve an offense that ranked 24th in total yards and points scored with an unsettled situation at quarterback. Harbaugh has indicated that Alex Smith will be his starter, but that hardly invokes a vote of confidence that this year’s offense will be any better than last years. The 49ers still have Frank Gore to run the ball and some capable receivers in TE Vernon Davis and WR Michael Crabtree, but until Smith develops better consistency in his overall game, this team will continue to struggle to put points on the board.
Defensively, Harbaugh inherits a Singletary-inspired defense that was tough against the run, but somewhat shaky in stopping the pass. San Francisco will count on first-round pick DE Aldon Smith to add some pressure on the quarterback and third-round pick CB Chris Culliver to add some depth to the secondary, but a couple of free agent pick-ups on this side of the ball, could go a long way towards making this unit one of the top 10 in the league.
The NFC West remains weak heading into the 2011 season, so the 49ers probably have a good a chance as any to win the division, but they will one of the teams hurt most because of the work stoppage given all the preparation time that has already been lost.
