San Diego was first in the AFC West last year with a 13-3 record. They were 6-2 at home and 7-1 on the road. They went 5-1 in the division and 9-3 in the conference.
They lost to the New York Jets 17-14 in the divisional round of the playoffs.
San Diego Chargers Outlook for 2010
San Diego remains the class of the AFC West as they are clearly the most talented team in the division. One of their primary problems over the past few seasons as been their propensity to get off to a slow start by digging themselves an early hole. Last season they lost three of their first five games before reeling off 11 straight victories to win the division going away. Next season, in the first six weeks they only play one team that had a winning record last year so they should be able to get a quick start out of the gate in 2010.
Offensively the Chargers had no problem putting points on the board as their 28.4 points per game ranked them fourth in the league. With QB Philip Rivers leading the aerial attack, San Diego’s passing offense was ranked fifth in the league. Rivers threw for 4,254 yards and both Antonio Gates and Vincent Jackson had over 1,100 yards receiving. Their main problem was running the ball as their rushing offense was ranked 31st in the league. With the addition of first round draft pick Ryan Mathews, a big powerful back to compliment the outside speed of Darren Sproles they hope to balance things out between the pass and the run.
San Diego’s defense is solid but not spectacular. When you have an offense that puts up close to 30 points a game you really do not have shut the other team down, you just have to be able to slow them down. Through free agency and the draft the Chargers have addressed their most pressing problem; stopping the run and should actually be a bit more balanced on this side of the ball as well.
The Chargers may not be as dominant as they were the second half of last season but they are still far and away the best team in the West and will once again be considered a legitimate Super Bowl contender.
2010 San Diego Chargers Prediction: 12-4, 1st place in the AFC West.
