Baltimore Ravens
The Baltimore Ravens looked about as good as they could in beating Pittsburgh last Sunday. The win puts them a game up on their rivals in the division and way more than that mentally. Lots were predicting a less than stellar season from Baltimore but if last week was any indication they have to be considered to be in the mix of Super Bowl contenders in the AFC.
It was a total victory for Baltimore last week. Joe Flacco was sharp and Ray Rice had great wiggle against the usually stout Steelers rush defense. The reason the game was never in doubt though was the tremendous defensive effort. The Ravens created an amazing 7 turnovers and Terrelle Suggs sacked Big Ben 3 times. If they are even half as good against Tennessee victory should be no problem.
Baltimore if primed for a letdown after last weeks dominant performance so their opponent is well timed. Tennessee looked pretty bad against Jacksonville but Baltimore is only 3-3 in road openers of late. The visiting team has won the last three times these teams have faced off – most recently in 2008. The 5.5 points seems a fair number, you can bet Baltimore up another point in need be and have confidence.
Tennessee Titans
With Indianapolis kind of out of the picture due to Peyton Manning’s injury there is a lot of talk of possibly Tennessee sneaking up to fill the void. Nothing we saw last week would give anyone any confidence in that prediction now. They lost to a Jacksonville team that turfed their starting QB on the eve of the season. Now they are staring down a possible 0-2 start.
They gave him his money but the Titans did not get much return on their investment in running back Chris Johnson on Sunday. It was to be expected given his absence in camp but it hamstrung the Titans attack big time. QB Matt Hasselbeck looked like he still has some life in him in connecting with Kenny Britt a couple of times for touchdowns. He and Johnson will test the Ravens defense that looked so strong a week ago.
Given what we saw from Baltimore last week it is going to be hard for the Titans to get a victory on Sunday. They have struggled against the Ravens in the past (2-4 since 2001), but won the last two meeting – most recently in 2008. These two have tended to play close games with the last two being decided by only 4 points. However, I am afraid that most of those games were when there was less of descrepancy in talent.
