The Rams mounted a slow and steady attack against San Francisco last week to win, 25-17. They scored in every quarter. First-year man Sam Bradford provided the veteran-like presence to force a playoff for the NFC West in week 17 by completing 28 of 37 for 292 yards and a touchdown. That ended a three game drought for the QB without a touchdown pass. Bradford also made history in the game when he broke the 12-year old rookie record for completions set by Peyton Manning.
The St. Louis defense stepped up in the second half, limiting the 49ers to three points in the second half after surrendering 14 points in the first.
Both Smiths manned QB for San Francisco and were sacked twice, while Westbrook was held to 40 yards. Steven Jackson was limited to 48 yards on 24 carries, but managed a touchdown.
Seattle dropped its third straight last week against Tampa Bay, losing 38-15. The Seahawks jumped to an early lead 7-3 in the first then but ran out of gas and were shut down for the next two quarters. A surge for eight points in the fourth, kept the game respectable.
QB Hasselbeck would leave the game with a leg strain after throwing only four passes but vows to be ready this week. Backup Whitehurst came off the bench and completed 11 of 18 but failed to find a touchdown in the mix.
Josh Freeman was the playmaker for Tampa Bay, completing 21 of 26 for 237 yards and five touchdowns as he shredded the Seattle secondary.
The Rams are not an impressive team by any means, but are playing for the playoffs, though those dreams may die in the first round. Meanwhile, Seattle is playing for nothing and features a dismal defense. Look for it to fail yet again as the Rams win their eighth on the year.
The odds makers have the St. Louis Rams as a -3 point favorite with an over/under of 41.5.
