Oakland opens the 2011 season looking to build on last season’s 8-8 record, which was its first non-losing season since 2002. The Raiders finished the year with a 3-5 straight up record on the road, but a perfect 6-0 SU record in the division.
New head coach Hue Jackson may have some early concerns with his team after posting a 0-4 record in the preseason while getting outscored 101-44. Jason Campbell remains the Raiders starting quarterback heading into this game, but Jackson has Kyle Boller waiting in the wings in case Campbell falters. Fortunately, Oakland has an effective rushing attack to fall back on led by running backs Michael Bush and Michael Bennett.
Denver started the 2009 season with six straight wins, but it has been all downhill since then with just six more in its last 26 games. The Broncos finished last season with an overall record of 4-12 SU, but three of the wins were at Mile High Stadium.
Kyle Orton started the preseason on the trading block but will get the call as the Broncos’ starting quarterback for this game. Denver lacks any real playmakers at the other skill positions, but Lance Ball and Knowshon Moreno both looked pretty good running the ball in the preseason and Eric Decker and Matt Willis did a good job catching it. The big question mark on this team is how much better will the defense be after finishing near the bottom of the league in almost every major category last season.
The Raiders have won five of the last seven games in this series SU and are 8-2 against the spread in the last 10 meetings. The total has gone ‘over’ in six of the last eight games overall.
The odds makers have the Denver Broncos as a -3 point favorite with an over/under of 40.
Stick with the recent trends in this series despite Oakland’s 0-5 record SU in prime time season openers, as the Raiders snap the losing streak with an opening-day victory as the three-point road dog.
The Pick: Oakland 23 Denver 17
