Pittsburgh Steelers 2010 NFL Record:12-4 Home: 5-3 Away: 7-1
Pittsburgh finished first in the AFC North last year with a 12-4 record. The Steelers were 5-3 at home and 7-1 on the road. They went 5-1 in the division and 9-3 in the conference.
They lost to Green Bay in Super Bowl XVL 31-25 after beating Baltimore 31-24 in the Divisional Round and New York 24-19 in the AFC Championship.
Pittsburgh Steelers 2011 Preview
The Pittsburgh Steelers won the Super Bowl in 2005 and came crashing down the following season with an 8-8 record. They climbed the summit again and won a title in 2008, only to miss the playoffs with a 9-7 record the following year. Last year they made it all the way back to the championship game, but lost for the second time in franchise history. The last time a team got back to the title game after losing one the year before was the 1994 Buffalo Bills, who ran off a string of four Super Bowl losses in the early ‘90’s.
From a talent standpoint, there is no reason to believe that the Steelers cannot reverse these up and down trends. Ben Roethlisberger is back as the starting quarterback and wide receivers Hines Ward and Mike Wallace along with tight end Heath Miller form the nucleus of the receiving corps. Running back Rashard Mendenhall will anchor the ground game and the addition of offensive lineman Marcus Gilbert in the second round of the draft helps to sure-up the offensive line.
The defense remains intact from last season with the signing of Lamarr Woodley to a long-term deal. The Steelers also added defensive tackle Cam Heyward in the first round on the draft to a unit that was ranked second overall in total yards allowed and first in points allowed.
The only question mark for this team is can four-year head coach Mike Tomlin avoid the pitfalls that besiege so many other teams that end up on the losing end in the Super Bowl. Any kind of fall will not be that steep, but a hungry Ravens’ team will prove to be too much to hold off for another season.
