Pittsburgh Steelers Outlook for 2010
It is hard to know what to make of Pittsburgh’s chances in 2010. On one hand after last year’s disappointing fall from Super Bowl Champions to missing the postseason altogether, you would think this team would reload and be back with a vengeance. On the other hand because of off field issues, they traded one of their top receivers, Santonio Holmes for next to nothing and will be without their starting QB, Ben Roethlisberger for at least four games while he serves out a league suspension. It remains to be seen what kind of long term effect all this turmoil will have on the team as a whole.
It appears that eight year veteran QB Byron Leftwich will get the start in Roethliberger’s absence as he is the most qualified replacement on the roster. With Holmes gone it will be up to WR’s Hines Ward and Heath Miller to pick up the slack to replace the loss of 78 receptions and close to 1300 yards in receiving. Right off the bat you would have to think that the Steelers’ offense is going to take another step backwards in 2010.
The heart and soul of this team has always been their defense and they took a step backwards last season as well. They finished ranked fifth overall, but were 13th in points allowed and 16th against the pass. In this year’s draft they selected DE’s Jason Worilds in the second round and Thaddeus Gibson in the fourth round to try and add some depth to an aging defensive line.
There is still enough talent on this team to contend for another title, but getting out from the current cloud they are under could be easier said than done. Third year head coach Mike Tomlin’s leadership skills will be severely tested in what is shaping up as an extremely challenging year for Pittsburgh.
2010 Pittsburgh Steelers Prediction: 7-9, third place in the AFC North.
