Oakland Raiders 2011 Preview
Since its Super Bowl run in 2002, Oakland had fallen on rough times until last year’s return to .500 marked a dramatic shift upwards after seven straight losing seasons. The question for this team heading into the 2011 season, is can it take another step forward and seriously challenge for the division title, or will it fall back into the ‘black hole’ it has been in for most of the past decade? Despite the turnaround, Tom Cable was shown the front door and team owner Al Davis brought in Hue Jackson as his new head coach. Jackson’s No.1 priority along with offensive coordinator Al Saunders, will be to develop his quarterback, Jason Campbell into top-notch franchise-type player.
Campbell came over to the Raiders last season after being released by Washington, but struggled with consistency in Cable’s offensive scheme. Jackson and Saunders ‘bombs away’ mentality will look to exploit Campbell’s big arm as much as possible. His primary targets will be Jacoby Ford, Louis Murphy, and Darius Heyward-Bey. They lost TE Zach Miller to Seattle via free agency, but were able to lure Kevin Boss away from the Giants to take his place.
While these two offensive master-minds will look to dial-up the passing game, Oakland will still rely heavily on a running game that was ranked second in the NFL last season with an average of 155.9 yards a game. RB Darren McFadden led the way with 1,157 rushing yards and seven touchdowns, but Michael Bush was productive as well with an additional 655 rushing yards and eight TD’s.
The Raiders made a point of adding some depth to the defensive secondary despite finishing the season ranked second in the NFL in passing yards allowed, after losing Pro Bowl CB Nnamdi Asomugha to Philadelphia. They drafted DB DeMarcus Van Dyke in the third round and Chimdi Chekwa in the fourth. Oakland also locked-up LB Kamerion Wimbley to a long-term deal that will keep him with the team for at least five more years.
The extended player lockout did nothing to help Jackson’s transition as the Raiders new head coach or Campbell development in the new offensive system, so a slow start out of the gate is to be expected. Oakland continues to improve, but the return to its glory days is still a season or two away.
