NFL Week 5 – Top Pointspread Plays

Top 3 NFL Pointspread Plays – Week 5

Week 4 in the NFL was almost a carbon copy of Week 3. The dogs once again ran wild as nine teams getting points covered the spread and six of these dogs won their game outright. Over the past three weeks, 29 underdogs have won ATS against just 17 favorites. The visiting team also got the best of it for the second week in a row as nine road teams won ATS against just five home teams.

Points are a little harder to come by in this week’s lines. There are six home teams getting points with the New Orleans (-6 ½) at Arizona game having the largest spread. Of the road teams getting points, the largest spread has unbeaten Kansas City getting eight points against Indianapolis.

Here is a look at my top three ‘pointspread’ plays for the NFL’s Week 5. All lines are courtesy of Sportsbook.com.

vs.

Chicago Bears @ Carolina Panthers -1

Chicago suffered its first loss of the season last week but even more troubling was the complete breakdown of the offensive line against the Giants. The Bears gave up nine sacks in their first 20 plays and got their quarterback Jay Cutler knocked out of the game with a concussion. Journeyman Todd Collins will get the start in his place against the Panthers.

Carolina is 0-4 but came within two points of knocking off New Orleans last week in a 16-14 loss. The Panthers will rely upon a rushing game that is averaging 113.5 yards per game led by RB DeAngelo Williams and Jonathan Stewart to move the ball against Chicago.

The Bears are 4-9 ATS in their last 13 games overall and 3-9 ATS in their last 12 road games. The Panthers are 9-2 ATS in their last 11 games against the NFC and 3-1-1 ATS in their last five games against Chicago. The Pick: Carolina -1

vs.

Green Bay Packers (-2 ½) @ Washington Redskins

Green Bay’s offense is averaging 321.2 yards per game, which is ranked 19th in the league, but the Packers are ranked fifth in points per game averaging 26.5. QB Aaron Rodgers, who has already thrown for 940 yards and eight TD’s, will go against a Redskin defense that is ranked 31st against the pass.

Washington’s defense has given up an average of 406 yards and 19.8 points in its first four games. The Redskins offense took a major hit when they lost RB Clinton Portis for at least four weeks with a torn groin muscle.

The Packers are 9-3-1 ATS in their last 13 games overall and 5-2 ATS in their last seven road games. The Redskins are 4-12 ATS in their last 16 home games. The Pick: Green Bay -2 ½

vs.

New Orleans Saints (-6 ½) @ Arizona Cardinals

New Orleans is averaging 344 yards of total offense including an average of 270.8 passing yards per game. With QB Drew Brees at the helm, the Saints will be going against a Cardinals defense that is ranked 29th overall and 23rd against the pass.

Arizona, in a desperate move to try and generate some offense, will start undrafted rookie QB Max Hall in this game. The Cardinals offense is ranked 29th in points and passing yards per game and 31stoverall. Combined with a porous defense, Arizona ranks near the bottom of the league in just about every major category on both sides of the ball.

The Saints are 7-2-1 ATS in their last 10 games played on grass and 5-1 ATS in the last six games played against the Cardinals. The Pick: New Orleans -6 ½
