NFL Week 5 Preview, Match Ups & Predictions
With a month of football under their belts, the teams will begin to settle into their own, and the division battles will start to take shape as the 2010-11 NFL season progresses. Teams with byes are Miami, New England, Pittsburgh, and Seattle. My pick for Game of the Week is Minnesota at the New York Jets. An epic clash of experience and youth. Here I take a look at the matchups, giving you some early insight that will help make your 2010 NFL wagers winners.

SUN, OCT 10 TIME (ET)
Jacksonville at Buffalo 1:00 PM CBS – QB David Garrard tossed a touchdown pass to Mike Sims-Walker with 56 seconds remaining to lead the Jags to a victory over the Bills in last season’s meeting in Buffalo. Te Bills will be wrenched after their prior weeks game against the Jets and with a weary defense drops their second in a row.
Tampa Bay at Cincinnati 1:00 PM FOX – The Bucs Gerald McCoy will be ready to attack the Bengals o-line in an effort to bring down QB Carson Palmer. Cincinnati will need to have an effective ground attack, relying not solely on just the passing game to get this one done. By this point in the season last year, Tampa Bay was 0-5 while the Bengals were 4-1. I don’t’ think things will be much different in 2010.
Atlanta at Cleveland 1:00 PM FOX – Atlanta would appear to be the clear favorite here as the Browns turmoil continues to swell. The Cleveland defense will have to contend with a host of offensive threats including QB Matt Ryan, RB Michael Turner and WR Roddy White. A difficult task for even the best defense, much less the Browns’.
St. Louis at Detroit 1:00 PM FOX – The Rams’ only win of the 2009 season came against the Lions in Detroit in Week 8. The win snapped St. Louis’ 17-game losing streak. This year’s battle will star Matthew Stafford and Rams rookie QB Sam Bradford. It may not be one for the ages, but this could be a fun game to watch.
Kansas City at Indianapolis 1:00 PM CBS – Indianapolis have been winners over the Chiefs back in KC’s heyday when Priest Holmes and Larry Johnson were in the backfield; things haven’t changed much since.
Green Bay at Washington 1:00 PM FOX – The Packers edged the Redskins in the last meeting between the two back in 2007, and if Washington’s going to reverse that trend Donovan McNabb will have to bring his A-game. The Redskins D will need to exploit a thin Green Bay o-line and force Rodgers, who was sacked 15 times in the month of October, out of the pocket and into the danger zone. Even so, Rodgers performs well under pressure, finishing 2009 with almost 1,000 yards, an accuracy of 74.5 percent, and not a single game below a 110-passer rating. This could be a low-scoring affair, ending with a late scoring drive for the Pack.
Chicago at Carolina 1:00 PM FOX – Both of these teams will be looking for a little respect. These two like to run the ball and lean on their staunch defenses’. The last time the two ran into each other was in 2008, when the Panthers Jake Delhomme and rookie running back Jonathan Stewart led a stirring comeback for a 20-17 win that gave the Panthers an unlikely 2-0 start.
Denver at Baltimore 1:00 PM CBS – Kyle Orton will have his work cut out for him when the Broncos visit the “land of the crab cake.” The Ravens will whittle down the Denver D as RB Ray Rice pounds it out on the ground while Ray Lewis and Co. take care of any offensive danger the Broncos can muster.
NY Giants at Houston 1:00 PM FOX – Another AFC road game for the G-Men. The last time the Giants were in Houston, was in 2006 as New York edged out the Texans 14-10 with a late touchdown pass from Manning to TE Jeremy Shockey. But this is a much better Houston team. It wouldn’t be a surprise if NY pulled off the road win, but I see the Texans winning this non-conference game at home.
New Orleans at Arizona 4:05 PM FOX – The Cardinals are still tasting last years 45-14 bitter defeat at the hands of the Saints that ended their playoff run early on. New Orleans QB Drew Brees and the Saints’ offense are reminiscent of what the Warner-era Cardinals used to be. Arizona’s secondary will have to loom large in this one if they expect any likelihood of stopping the New Orleans passing attack and avoiding another embarrassing shellacking from the reigning champs.
San Diego at Oakland 4:15 PM CBS – Probably one of the most intense rivalries in the NFL. In the recent past it has been diluted by the Raiders inability to make the match ups even remotely interesting, including two losses in 2009. Can they Raiders change that this season against a San Diego team without L.T.? Probably not, as Rivers is better than anything Oakland can through under center.
Tennessee at Dallas 4:15 PM CBS – Dallas leads the all-time series 7-5 since the Titans franchise moved from Houston. The Cowboys front four will have to be up to the task of stuffing the run of they want continue to own the Titans especially in the Big D.
Philadelphia at San Francisco 8:20 PM NBC – Niners RB Frank Gore will need a big game if the home side wants a chance. DeSean Jackson had 140 yards receiving and the Eagles beat the San Francisco 27-13 in 2009 to clinch a playoff spot for the eighth time this decade. Second act to follow; same as the first.
MON, OCT 11 TIME (ET)
Minnesota at NY Jets 8:30 PM – A classic Monday Night battle of the oldest starting QB in the NFL –Brett Favre — versus Jets young gun Mark Sanchez. However, it’s more likely to become a good old-fashioned football contest as two of the leagues best running backs – Adrian Peterson and Shonn Greene—go head-to head. Who will lead his team to victory? My guess is the wily ole veteran.
