With one pick in the 2012 NFL draft, the Washington Redskins changed their fortunes and set the football world on fire. The drafting of Robert Griffin III was not only expected in Washington, it was desperately needed. Despite undergoing a reconstructive knee surgery during the offseason, which was not the first of his football career, RGIII is still expected to be the electrifying difference in the NFC East in 2013.
So what have the Redskins done to help RGIII and the rest of his teammates achieve the goal of making the playoffs? There were some interesting moves made by the Redskins during the 2013 offseason, and some of them will definitely help Griffin take the Redskins to the playoff promised land.
2013 Super Bowl Odds: 40/1
Notable Change #1: RGIII says he is “all in” for week 1.
The Washington Redskins are taking a terrible risk by changing their tune on how they want to treat RGIII after his surgery. Griffin says that he is fully recovered and all in to start on week 1, but that may not be the best idea. If the Redskins are wrong and Griffin re-injures that knee, then the Redskins just destroyed their entire future just to start Griffin a few weeks earlier than they should have. Why the Redskins have suddenly lost faith in backup Kirk Cousins also remains a mystery.
Notable Change #2: Signing DonteStallworth.
Wide receiver DonteStallworth has seen his career fizzle a little ever since he was forced to leave Cleveland due to legal troubles. Even after facing the full wrath of the law and the potential loss of his career, Stallworth still took forever to get rid of his demons. The fact is that Stallworth has good speed and great hands. He will be a very welcomed addition to a Washington Redskins’ receiving corps that seems to be growing by the day with quality players.
Notable Change #3: Signing Xavier Nixon.
If you are a Redskins’ fan and you are not familiar with the name Xavier Nixon, do not feel bad. Nixon was signed as an undrafted free agent offensive lineman out of Florida. What makes him so significant is the upside that he offers with very little financial investment on the part of the Redskins. Nixon is strong, fast and very smart. But he is also inconsistent and lacks solid technique. The Redskins figure that Nixon would be a good project for the practice squad or an addition to the depth chart. In any case, it is a signing that will not cost the Redskins very much at all, but Nixon could wind up being one of those surprise players that comes in late in the season because of starter injuries and then shines when Washington needs him the most.
