After last week, the New Orleans Saints put a bit more distance between themselves and the rest of the NFC with an impressive come from behind win in Miami. Trailing 24-3 in the second quarter, Drew Brees and Company put on the after burners in the second half, scoring 36 points to end up winning 46-34. After Minnesota’s 27-17 loss to Pittsburgh, the Saints are the only undefeated team left in the conference. The NFC East race tightened up as the Giants lost their second straight game, getting upended by Arizona at home 17-24. Coupled with wins by Dallas over Atlanta 37-21 and Philadelphia’s win over Washington on Monday night 27-17, all three teams currently have two losses on the year. Some other teams fell off the pace, most notably, Chicago who only scored one touchdown in a 45-10 blowout loss to Cincinnati. The 49ers tried to come back from a 21 point deficit to the Texans only to fall short 24-21. The Panthers, Buccaneers, and Rams combined for a total of 20 points and now have a combined record of 2-18.
Moving onto week eight, the key match ups we will be reviewing are; Minnesota @ Green Bay, New York Giants @Philadelphia, and Atlanta @ New Orleans.
Minnesota Vikings @ Green Bay Packers (-3) Current Over/Under 47
Putting all the drama aside of Brett Favre returning to Green Bay to face his old team in front the home town crowd, this game has serious implications for the NFC North title. A Packer win would move them to 5-2 and drop the Vikings to 6-2 with a split in their head to head series this year. A Viking win would essentially give them a three game lead with the tie breaker. Green Bay is coming off a big win over the hapless Browns and if they can protect Aaron Rodgers like they did in this game he should have a big day against the Vikings. For the first time this season the offensive line didn’t give up a sack and Rodgers threw for 3 TD’s and 0 interceptions. The Vikings on the other hand imploded against the Steelers in the 4th Qt on two Brett Favre turnovers that resulted in the game winning points for Pittsburgh. I do not expect the Vikings to play as bad on Sunday, but I would still go with the Packers to cover the 3. Take this game to go over, as these teams have a way of piling up the points. New York Giants @ Philadelphia Eagles (-3) Current Over/Under 44.5
This is a classic NFC East rivalry between two teams that do not like each other and have long memories. The Giants remember how the Eagles knocked them out of the playoffs last year in the Meadowlands and the Eagles remember how New York beat them at home during the season. Both these teams have not looked their best over the past two weeks with one win between them. While both teams have a great defense and quarterbacks that can beat you with their arms, this game is going to come down to which team does not give up any costly turnovers. Both their defense and special teams are extremely opportunistic and have a way of turning interceptions and fumbles into touchdowns. Look for Philly’s defense to pressure Manning into one too many bad throws resulting in a close win, possibly a push. They will both score their share of points so take the over. Atlanta Falcons @ New Orleans Saints (- 10 ½) Current Over/Under 54
These two teams split last year, each winning at home. Despite the fact that the Falcons are also a dome team, the distinct advantage goes to the Saints playing in the Superdome where they have been unstoppable. Last week on the road, they were able to bounce back from a terrible start and still put up 46 points on a decent Dolphin team. They have now scored 40+ points in four of their first six games. The Falcons only hope is to try and slow them down, while scoring on some big plays of their own. Last week against Dallas, the Cowboys were able to put pressure on QB Matt Ryan sacking him four times and forcing two interceptions. Atlanta’s offensive line is going to have to protect him a lot better than that if they are to have any chance in this one. This game is going to be a track meet as I’m going way out on a limb and taking the Falcons to cover the 10 ½. I am much more confident that despite such a high total, it still goes over.
