New York Jets 2008 NFL Record: 9-7 | New York Jets ATS (Against The Spread): 7-9
The 2008 season for the New York Jets could be called the Brett Favre rollercoaster. His strong start to the season propelled the Jets to an 8-3 start. His poor play in the final weeks of the season led to a 1-4 finish as the team missed the playoffs and finished 9-7 on the year. The acquisition of Brett Favre led the team to cut Chad Pennington, leaving the club without a quarterback of the future. That problem was solved with the drafting of Mark Sanchez out of USC, a move that Jets fans are of course comparing to the landing of one Joe Namath decades ago. The team was strong in the running game, led by Thomas Jones and strong in defending the run but was poor in defending the pass, ranking 29 th on the year. The late season collapse of the Jets led to the firing of coach Eric Mangini.
NEW YORK JETS 2009 PREVIEW
The 2009 New York Jets Season Preview is looking good and fans have much to be excited about with new coach Rex Ryan and first round draft pick QB Mark Sanchez both joining the squad in the offseason. Their is much hype for the upcoming season with coach Ryan bringing a fiery attitude to the team right from his arrival. They Jets have made some great offseason acquisitions via free agency and the draft and their is hope among the fan base that the Jets will make a return to the NFL elite. Head Coach Rex Ryan had spent the last ten years with the Baltimore Ravens. He spent the 2008 season as assistant head coach and defensive coordinator. He made a name for himself as the Ravens Defense has been among the NFL’s best for the last ten years. Coach Ryan earned 2006 NFL Assistant Coach of the Year honors from Pro Football Weekly and the Pro Football Writers Association. This is Coach Ryan’s first NFL head coaching job but he has made a name for himself as one of the top defensive coaching minds in the league. Brian Schottenheimer is the Jets Offensive Coordinator and has been with the Jets since 2006. Defensive Coordinator Bob Sutton has been with the team since 2000. Assistant Head Coach and Offensive Line Coach Bill Callahan joined the team in 2008 and was formerly the Head Coach of the Oakland Raiders for in 2002 and 2003. Assistant Quarterbacks Coach John DeFillipo is looking forward to the 2009 New York Jets season.
2009 NEW YORK JETS OFFENSE:
The offense for the 2009 New York Jets is going to continue to operate primarily through the running attack. Thomas Jones proved himself to be a worthy number 1 back, and Leon Washington showed himself to be a great change of pace back. Washington’s contributions to the return game will also continue to help the offense a great deal. Mark Sanchez will likely win the starting job and be thrown into the fire from the beginning. The offensive line and running game will need to be firing on all cylinders to give Sanchez a chance to compete, particularly with a thin group of wide receivers.
2009 NEW YORK JETS DEFENSE:
New coach Rex Ryan established his reputation not just from his last name, but from the fierce defenses he coached in Baltimore. The plan is to bring that same fire, and those same schemes to the Jets to lead a defensive revival for the team. Of course, bringing in LB Bart Scott from the Ravens will go a long way towards achieving that goal. Safety Kerry Rhodes is another bright spot on the defensive unit but the team will need better play from the entire secondary to see major improvement in 2009. The pass rushing and complete field coverage that Scott provides should also help further that cause. As should the acquisition of cornerback Lito Sheppard from the Eagles.
