They failed to qualify for the postseason.
New York Giants 2011 Preview
Tom Coughlin enters his eighth season as the head coach of this team and once again he is dealing with a number of personnel issues both on and off the field. He is trying to not let the contract situation with DE Osi Umenyiora become a distraction but it is too late for that. He just lost his No.1 draft pick Prince Amukamara for at least two months after he broke his foot on his first day of practice with the team. TE Kevin Boss just signed with Oakland as an unrestricted free-agent. There is no real concern with any of these issues as the one thing that has made Coughlin successful over the years is the ability to put things like this aside and get his team ready to play football once the regular season gets underway.
Eli Manning is entering his seventh season as the Giants starting quarterback and is coming off a 2010 campaign where he passed for over 4000 yards and 31 touchdowns, but also threw a career-high 25 interceptions lost five fumbles along the way. He will still be surrounded by a number of talented playmakers such as RB Ahmad Bradshaw, who was recently re-signed to a new four-year deal. He also has WR’s Hakeem Nicks and Mario Manningham, who combined for 139 receptions for 1,996 yards and 20 touchdowns last season. However, the No.1 priority is for Manning this season is to do a much better job of taking care of the ball.
The normally stout Giants defense finished the season ranked seventh overall, but slipped to 17th in points allowed, giving up an average of 21.7 a game. The loss of Amukamara will hurt, given that he was expected to step in right away to help tighten up a secondary that only gave up an average of 210 passing yards a game last year, but was torched for big plays on a number of occasions. New York also added some depth by selecting DL Marvin Austin in the second round and LB’s Greg Jones and Jacquian Williams in the later rounds.
The Giants have enough talent to win at least 10 games again in 2011, but it may not be enough to keep pace with the revamped Eagles. If Coughlin can limit the distractions and keep the right people healthy, then New York should make a return trip to the playoffs as a wildcard team after missing out on a spot in the postseason last year on a division record tie-breaker.
