New Orleans Saints 2011 Preview
For the most-part, New Orleans played extremely well last season in defense of its 2009 Super Bowl title, but perplexing losses to Arizona (30-20), Cleveland (30-17), and Tampa Bay (23-13) in the season finale derailed its chances to secure a more favorable position in the postseason. Even more of a head-scratcher was its loss to the Seahawks as a heavy road favorite in the playoffs. The pieces remain in-place for this team to have a legitimate shot of getting back on top in the NFC if a couple of holes are successfully filled.
The biggest hole in the Saints’ offense last season was a running game that ended the year ranked 28th in the NFL with an average of just 94.9 yards a game. Both Pierre Thomas and Julius Jones were hampered by injuries for a good part of the 2010 season, so they decided to add RB Mark Ingram from Alabama with the 28th overall pick in the first round of this year’s draft. The hand-writing could be on the wall for Reggie Bush’s career in New Orleans unless the former USC-standout is willing to take a hefty pay-cut to stay with the team.
As long as Drew Brees is behind center, New Orleans has a better-than-average chance to win every game. He had another outstanding season in 2010; with a 68.1 completion percentage and 4,620 passing yards for 448 completions and 33 TD’s. The only un-Brees thing about last year’s performance was the 22 interceptions he threw.
The Saints’ defense was solid across the board; ranking seventh in points allowed and fourth in total yards. The only crack that needs to be filled is the 112.3 yards per game it gave up on the ground. The addition of DE Cameron Jordan with their first selection in the first round of the draft along with LB Martez Wilson and DB Jonny Patrick in the third round should add some much needed depth on this side of the ball.
The overall talent level on this team remains high, and the veteran leadership of Brees and Head Coach Sean Peyton should be able to quickly erase any of the rust due to the prolonged player lock-out this offseason. This quick start leads to an early advantage against the rest of the teams in the division which the Saints are able to maintain all season long.
