New England Patriots 2008 NFL Record: 11-5 | New England Patriots ATS (Against The Spread): 9-7
In many ways the 2008 NFL season for the New England Patriots can be summarized by watching only the first game of the season. Tom Brady went down with a knee injury and missed the rest of the year. Matt Cassel capably filled in and the team still managed to go 11-5, which would normally be good enough to make the playoffs although the team barely missed the cut. The Patriots finished with one of the best running attacks in the league, put together with a largely hodgepodge unit in which no one player dominated and 5 players had more than 70 carries. The defense showed some signs of aging and wasn’t dominant, although the team still finished 8 th in points allowed and 10 th in yardage allowed.
NEW ENGLAND PATRIOTS 2009 PREVIEW
No 2009 New England Patriots Season Preview would be complete without Bill Belichick, A..K.A. “The Hoodie”, and mastermind of the Patriots. Belichick enters his ninth season as the New England patriots head coach, and many say he is the best head coach in the last decade, surpassing Bill Parcells as the best head coach alive. With three Superbowl victories in four years Belichick just might be the best the NFL has to offer. Belichick has faced turmoil in the pass, with allegations such as video tapping practices of the other team before the Superbowl, and recording Quarterback audibles at the line of scrimmage. That was two years ago however and in the past. Belichick now answers other questions such as when he will win his next Superbowl. Two years ago Belichick and the patriots finished the season 16-0, a feet that had not been accomplished sense the 1972 Dolphins finished the regular season undefeated. The Patriots went on to the Superbowl that year with a record of 18-0, they faced the underdog New York Giants and lost, ruining hopes of becoming the first team in NFL history to finish a season 19-0. The 2008 season fell well short of that, as the Pats missed the NFL Playoffs but the 2009 New England Patriots should be much better with Tom Brady, back at the helm. The Patriots made a big coaching move this year allowing Offensive coordinator Josh McDaniels to become the head coach of the Denver Broncos, it’s still unseen who will call the plays for the Patriots this year. Bill Belichick is believed by most to take over as play caller for the patriots, however its more likely that Tom Brady will begin to call more plays at the line of scrimmage himself. Two other minor coaching changes involve hiring Wide Receivers coach Chad O’Shea and special teams coordinator Scott O’Brien.
2009 NEW ENGLAND PATRIOTS OFFENSE:
It’s never a bad thing to get a sure firer Hall of Fame quarterback returning to the lineup in his prime and feeling fit to play some football. Brady has been itching to get back into the action and seems motivated to make up for lost time. Wide receivers Randy Moss and Wes Welker will make that easy to do. Additionally, the team grabbed up underrated veteran running back Fred Taylor. In a reduced role he should be able to stay fresh while proving to be a difference maker for the club.
2009 NEW ENGLAND PATRIOTS DEFENSE:
The defense for the 2009 New England Patriots will be missing some of their big names and some of their fiery leadership with the Mike Vrabel and Rodney Harrison gone. However, Pro Bowl lineman Richard Seymour remains, as does Tedy Bruschi. Jerod Mayo was a revelation in his rookie season, leading the team in tackles. The team hopes to have a healthy Adalius Thomas as well, which could return the unit to dominance. The Patriots brought in two cornerbacks, Shawn Springs and Leigh Bodden, to patch up the secondary.
