Minnesota Vikings 2011 Preview
The revolving door at quarterback shuffles out one aging veteran for another, as it will be Donovan McNabb’s turn to try and do what Brett Favre could not; take the Vikings all the way to the Super Bowl. This team was one win away from getting there in 2009; before everything came crashing down in a season to forget in 2010. Also gone is Brad Childress, who helped champion Favre’s cause the last two seasons. He was replaced by Leslie Frazier, who led the team to a 3-3 finish as the interim head coach.
McNabb spent last season in Washington after getting traded to the Redskins from Philadelphia, but never really fit in with Mike Shanahan’s offensive scheme. Frazier is counting on McNabb’s overall experience to work the same kind of magic that Favre was able to bring in 2009, but he will have to do it without WR Sidney Rice, who signed with Seattle as a free agent. To try and fill the void, the Vikings have added Devin Aromashodu from Chicago and Michael Jenkins from Atlanta, but a talent like Rice is not easily replaced. Fortunately, Minnesota still has Adrian Peterson running the ball, which will take some pressure off the passing game.
The defense also took a major hit with the loss of DE Ray Edwards, who signed a deal with Atlanta as a free agent. The impact on the Vikings’ pass rush will surely be felt, after Edwards accounted for 16.5 sacks over the past two seasons. Minnesota used five draft choices on this side of the ball and will have to hope that a few of these players, especially defensive lineman Christian Ballard can step in right away and make an impact.
The loss of Rice was a major blow to the Vikings’ chances to return their offense to its 2009 level of production, but the addition of McNabb adds the necessary veteran leadership to make this team a legitimate contender for a wildcard spot this year. Green Bay remains well out of reach in terms of winning enough games to challenge for the division, but a timely placed wager on the ‘over’ for Minnesota’s 6.5 projected win total is well worth the risk.
