They failed to qualify for the postseason.

Miami Dolphins 2011 Preview

It is hard to know what direction Miami is headed in this season after the roller coaster ride it has been on the past four years. The Dolphins sunk to a dismal 1-15 record in 2007, but staged a dramatic turnaround in 2008 with 11 wins and a division title. After back-to-back 7-9 seasons the past two years, the natives are getting restless and the heat could be turned up on head coach Tony Sparano, who is entering his fourth season with the team, if they get off to another slow start.

Much of the controversy this preseason has revolved around the play of Chad Henne and whether or not he has what it takes to be a starting quarterback in this league. Henne has struggled with consistency in the past two seasons, but his overall numbers did improve from one season to the next. He will have will have wide receiver Brandon Marshall and newly acquired running back Reggie Bush occupying some of the other skill positions on offense, but as a whole, this unit will not improve until Henne can even out his play on a week-to-week basis.

The one area where Miami has been consistent is on defense. With the roster basically intact from last season’s squad that finished the season ranked sixth overall; eighth against the pass and seventh against the run, the Dolphins should be able to hang with just about any team it plays. To add some veteran depth, Miami re-signed defensive end Jason Taylor and former Seattle defensive tackle Ray Willis. It also replaced linebacker Channing Crowder with Kevin Burnett, who was with San Diego the past two seasons.

The schedule makers did not do the Dolphins any favors with an opening day home game against New England followed by games against Houston, San Diego, and the Jets in the next five weeks. Things ease up a bit from there, but they still have to play the entire NFC East and Kansas City on the road before closing out the season against the Patriots and the Jets.

Miami Dolphins 2011 Season Prediction
