Detroit Lions
There was no more shocking result from last Sunday (including Baltimore’s loss at Tennessee) then how thoroughly the Detroit Lions beat down the Kansas City Chiefs. There was a lot of sentiment that the Lions would not be able to handle the increased expectations being foisted upon them but after seeing how the team responded both offensively and defensively we need to be willing to accept that this is a team on the rise – with a very high ceiling.
Against K.C. the only disappointing part of their performance was the running game. Everything else was fantastic especially a defense that picked off three passes and recovered three fumbles. When you are plus 5 in turnovers in a game it is not hard to outplay your opponent. Add that to zero sacks and only four penalties and you can just tell that the Lions are maturing.
The Lions are catching the Vikings at a perfect time. They squandered a lead last week to Tampa, losing to fall to the dreaded 0-2. Their season, as far as making the playoffs go is probably over, with another loss being a death blow. Another sign of a franchise on the rise is how they deal with inferior opponents. Like last week we might learn a lot about the Lions from this one…especially if they win.
Minnesota Vikings
The Minnesota Vikings are one of a handful of 0-2 teams entering week three of the season. They certainly are not the most surprising of the group but nevertheless any chance of resurrecting their season will be pretty much out the window if they don’t beat Detroit on Sunday. Last week against Tampa they let victory slip through their fingers in the second half. After seeing Detroit blitz Kansas City they should definitely be worried about 2011 becoming a lost season.
At the end of the first half the Viking had things in hand as they were up 17-0. But in the second half it was a different story with a last minute TD giving the Bucs a great come from behind win. Although it was a loss it was a much better performance than in the opener at San Diego. The Vikings outgained their opponents but couldn’t stop the momentum down the stretch, even at home. Hitting the road would be a nightmare but playing Detroit at home gives them a chance to regroup.
The line for this one is definitely inflated by the whooping that the Lions put on the Chiefs last week. Still the way the Vikings looked in the second half I don’t think I would back them until they at least get a win under their belt. Sometimes a season can be lost pretty quickly and this one is beginning to look like that. Buyer beware.
The odds makers have the Detroit Lions as a -3.5 point favorite with an over/under of 45.
