Kansas City Chiefs 2010 NFL Record: 10-6 Home: 7-1 Away: 3-5
Kansas City finished first in the AFC West last year with a 10-6 record. The Chiefs were 7-1 at home and 3-5 on the road. They went 2-4 in the division and 6-6 in the conference.
They lost to Baltimore 30-7 in the Wildcard Round of the playoffs.
Kansas City Chiefs 2011 Preview
Looking at Kansas City’s odds and projected win total, you get the feeling that the majority of the betting public believes that last season’s 10-6 record and AFC West title was just a fluke and a return to mediocrity is right around the corner. When you start breaking down the talent that was already on the Chiefs’ roster along with the players they added through the draft and free agency, only then you realize that at the very least Kansas City should be as good as last year’s record, but there is a strong possibility it will be even better.
Matt Cassel continues to grow into his role as this team’s starting quarterback. He finished the 2010 regular season with 3,116 passing yards and his overall 93.0 passer rating was the highest in his three seasons as a starter in this league. Cassel’s 58.2 completion percentage could be better, but he threw 27 touchdown passes verse just seven interceptions which is a pretty good ratio. WR Dwayne Bowe, who led the team in receptions in 2010 with 72 for 1,162 yards and 15 TD’s, will be joined by first-round draft pick Jonathan Baldwin to form a potent one-two punch in the lineup. They also added WR Steve Breaston, as a free agent from Arizona.
Another solid duo is back for another season as RB’s Jamaal Charles and Thomas Jones will try and pick-up where they left off last season after combining to rush for 2,362 yards and 11 touchdowns. The Chiefs improved in this area as well with the addition of All-Pro FB Le’Ron McClain to the backfield.
A couple of key additions to the defensive side of the ball include LB Justin Houston and DL Alan Bailey in the third round of the draft and DB Jalil Brown in the fourth round. More importantly, they were able to sign DE Tamba Hall to a long-term deal that will keep him in Kansas City for at least the next five years. Kansas City also signed DT Kelly Gregg and LB Brandon Siler to add some depth to the defensive roster.
The main thing the Chiefs have going for them this season is a schedule that includes games against the NFC North with the Packers at home and the AFC East with home games against Buffalo and Miami. It appears that San Diego will be more competitive this season, but the division could still be won with a repeat of last season’s 10-win effort.
