New York remains one of the favorites to compete for the AFC title this season, but there are some early cracks in the foundation despite the 2-1 straight-up start (1-2 against the spread). Last Sunday, it blew a 10-point lead against Oakland to fall 34-24 as a three-point road favorite.
The real concern for the Jets is a running game that has been grounded so far with an average of just 82 yards a game. Running back Shonn Greene has been held to 134 yards on 41 carries and is averaging a paltry 3.3 yards an attempt. There are some concerns on defense as well, as Rex Ryan’s pride and joy is giving up an average of 136.7 rushing yards a game, which is ranked 31st in the league.
Baltimore has been on a roller-coaster ride of its own so far. It posted a dominating 35-7 victory over Pittsburgh on opening day as a one-point home favorite and a 37-7 romp over St. Louis last Sunday as a 4.5-point road favorite, but fell flat on its face with a 26-13 loss to Tennessee as a 5.5-point road favorite in Week 2.
Running back Ray Rice continues to anchor the rushing attack with 229 yards on 40 carries. Joe Flacco has thrown for 810 yards and seven touchdowns, but is completing just 54.1 percent of his passes. One bright spot for the passing game is the emergence of rookie wide receiver Torrey Smith, who had five receptions for 152 yards and three touchdowns against the Rams in place of the injured Lee Evans.
The Jets are just 1-7 ATS in their last eight games against the Ravens overall and 2-4 ATS in their last six games in Baltimore. The total has stayed ‘under’ in six of the last nine meetings overall. These two met last season with the Ravens coming away with a 10-9 victory as one-point road underdogs.
Despite the recent trends in this series, stick with New York and the 3.5 points as this is shaping up as a three-point game either way.
The odds makers have the Baltimore Ravens as a -3.5 point favorite with an over/under of 41.5.
